Power Ranking - Sell, Hold, Buy or Avoid

Jan, 10 (Week 9) - Players, picks, gm points, wins, even... everything is a commodity. Assets fluctuate wildly in the eyes of the beholder and so do team performances. How much can you read into a year? A month? A week? Here, we will give you the rundown on which teams are fools gold, which are underpriced and which teams you can always trust. [jmac]

Rank Rating Team Record Comment
  1 (1) 98 Min Minnesota Timberwolves 11-1

Sell/Hold/Avoid - Seems harsh saying sell or avoid for a team who has been crushing it in the NLL lately, but there is just nothing to gain from jumping on them here. Are they the best team in the league? No. Are they a really good team? yes. They have lots of talent and are very well coached. Their best player is a super talent but has a penchant for doing stupid things. If you were able to get on them when spud dropped the team to the bottom of a salt mine, you'd be flying. You could go a few ways, here, and we wouldn't blame you for choosing any of them.

Hold - One of the NLL's 'Blue Chips'; never in a hurry to do anything but when the Thunder want to make something happen, they do. Best scouting team in the league and have a huge financial backing. Consistent, well coached, well managed and versatile as heck. The kind of team you don't need to worry about. Just sit back and watch the Ws roll in. If you weren't on them before this year, shame on you. if you got on about four years ago, you are Nostradamus.

No Advice - No insider trading here, so no recommendations. Make what you will of the Celtics. They are nothing if not entertaining to trade vicariously through and that KD dude is still pretty good, but you knew that already.

Buy - after a rough start to the year on the market, the Jazz stock has been steadily climbing this past month. When you read names such as Paul, Gasol, Aldridge and Ariza, it's a wonder how they ever fell so low. Buoyed by a new aggressive strategy, they have ascended the West standings. They are almost at their peak price but should hold steady for the rest of the season, so you might see a little more return if you buy now, but they are a very solid hold.

Buy - As much as it pains me to say this about one of the pick hoarders, this stock is one of the red hot buys. Not very often do you find a commodity that is great now and even better looking ahead, but the Hornets are one of those. The company started out from very humble beginnings a few years ago but have made incredible smart business decisions over the years to built their capital and are the only team with a Unicorn. Now, they trade with the big boys and shouldn't really have a right to do so just yet. Buy or hold, but do not sell!

Buy/Hold - Buy, buy, buy! And no, as much as I enjoy the N'Sync song, this is a different message (and different spelling for those of you playing at home). Not often do you see arguably the most talented team in the entire league down in the sixth spot. This is the Apple stock of the NLL - always innovative, connecting with the youth, taking huge profits, giving little back and finding new ways to re-invent the game and themselves. The Bucks this low are going to make you big bucks. Run, don't walk, to open your wallet and get on board.

Buy for the future, Sell for now - If you'd have told me at the start of the year I'd see the Grizzlies stock his the top quartile of the power rankings market I'd have had you drug tested and escorted from the premises. But alas, here we are, and the upstart Grizzlies have shown some big heart and big cajones during the season thus far. This could be the high point of their power rankings posturing, but as a long term commodity, the future is very bright. If you are looking to make short term gains, sell. if you are all about that slow burn turning into that melt-in-your-mouth brisket, safely hold onto the Memphis stocks.

Sell - Phoenix were being touted as a bust as little as weeks ago, so to see them this high on the rankings is a surprise. This team has potential, but this isn't the year to buy or the time. They acquired Hayward for next season and are still figuring things out. The Suns follow up wins against good teams with losses against bad ones. You just can't trust a team that is consistently inconsistent. High risk/reward, here, so follow your gut and do what you feels appropriate. Sell, bank the profit and buy some Phili or Brooklyn stock and bank profits.

Buy/Hold - Another 'Blue Chip' of the NLL, it's rate to see the Cavaliers this low in the standings, but this is our world with the NBA 2k17 engine. LeBron never gets hurt so the Cavs are always competing and are always a chance to win every game. Not that you should have questioned them, despite their recent mini-slump, you should have held tight to the Cavs. They have a GM who knows the game as well as any and recently spent 67 million dollars to sign Gerald Green. They want to win.

Buy/Hold - Defending Champs at .500 over the last 12 games... where do I sign up for making moneyyy. The Spurs have dealt with major injuries to Conley and consistent injuries to Embiid and Davis, and yet, still sit near atop of the Western Conference. In a big man's world, the two Spurs towers are arguably the biggest. If anyone you know panicked and hit the escape button on their allegiance to the Spurs, head on over to their house and pick up the pieces. They are absolutely money at this range and are bound to increase. It is as sure of a thing as I am sure Embiid will miss more games.

Buy/Hold - Buy, buy, buy. The Knicks are absolutely elite and if you are lucky enough to get or to have Knicks stock you lock it away and throw away the key. Their manager is the bloody creator of the league and he is the Architect of this entire NLL Matrix. How could he not have a great team and figure out how to always be a title contender when he built this world? If I had one wish for this year it's to be more like the Knicks. Expect to make double your profit if you get on the Knicks at this price. How many teams have Kyrie Irving as their second best player!? Only one, there's only one Kyrie Irving.

Bkn 134, Tor 129 L
Hold/Sell - Toronto is a middle of the pack type team and is stuck in the vicious Eastern Conference and this is round about where they are currently sitting on the power rankings, if not a little high. I would hold, because if you've gotten in already, you got in at a cheaper price than it is currently worth. If you are a cautious person, hold. if you want to make a quick buck and invest in a team like the Nets, do it. This Toronto team has a bright future, though, with Beal, Dunn and Hernangomez. Wouldn't blame you for doing either of those suggestions.

Avoid - The Nuggets have terrific talent on their team but after half a season's worth of data, you'd have to say that the pieces to the puzzle don't necessarily come from the same containers, if you catch my drift. A classic case of team chemistry, or lack of, trumping individual talent and stifling production. They have made some moves of late to create a team that just lives on the inside and feasts on the big man 2k cheese factory that is the 2017 engine. Smart moves, and even though I see improvements, hard to recommend a buy here. Check back in a few weeks... they won't have risen much in the rankings, but you will have a better feel if it's a worthy risk chucking a few fiddies at the Nugs.

Sell - Hornets are how high!? In the top half of the market? But aren't they the team who are trading anyone who can tie their shoes up for 2nd rounders? Len-sanity seems a lifetime away, and Dakari-mania is just starting, but their roster is thinner than a Victoria's Secret model on game day. Sell all and every piece of Pelicans stock you have and pinch yourself that you're making any profits off of it. Ranked currently above five teams that are in the playoffs currently, and their best player is injured, their second best player is injured and now Wayne Ellington is their best player. The sting is out of the Pelicans (typed Hornets first, loved Larry Johnson) and the line would have been a lot smoother if they were still the Hornets. Lucky for Gavin he still owns his first and has 17 2nd round picks. Silver lining. But seriously, sell, sell sell. Everyone jump ship, there's plenty of room on the floating door, Rose...

Hold/Avoid/Buy/Sell - The Lakers are an enigma, in the sense that they are always better than you think they are going to be but they are always worse than their performance shows. So my advice, is to trust your gut with this one. Greenmig gets the most out of his chargers, always, and always demands results. A man after my own hear, he hates losing and will do whatever it takes to win. He posted about potentially blowing it up then acquired Nicolas Batum to try and win now. It's in his DNA to not lose. That is a pedigree you can trust and shows the Lakers will never bottom out, making this a very safe stock to hold. They aren't the Blue Chip investment they once were, but you know if you put your money into the Lakers and Vuc, they will work hard for your money.

Phi 119, Hou 109 W
Buy/Hold - This is a team that routinely smashes out seasons in the 60s wins bracket and has been absolutely smashed by injures to his key personnel, arguably more than any other team. Dave used to be savage and more outspoken and sure of himself, as he plundered and pillaged his way to excellent deals and excellent results, discarding other managers and organisations in his wake. However, a quirky engine and reeling losses will send a man deep into his soul to wait and ponder until his best players return. He has actually held down the fort well and will soon rocket up the standings, so if you have some spare capital, this is one of the best value buys out there. Three things are certain in life; death, taxes, and 76ers making NLL playoffs.

Mem 97, Sac 84 L
Sac 54, Orl 105 L
Avoid/Hold - The Kings, along with the Pistons and Celtics, are arguably the three loosest traders in the land. This is a double edged sword, with it either bringing better results or worse ones. With this in mind, and in light of the huge trade he has just completed, I would hold or avoid for now, as this current lineup has no track record to speak of and it's just a total guess if you were to get involved now. They are right in the middle right now and in the middle of the NLL standings, too, so they aren't at risk to plummet or take off in the next week or so. Just pay attention to them and see what happens, as they could turn into a value buy. But pray for Klemm, he has more gm points debt than Greece.

Atl 104, Cha 94 W
LAL 91, Atl 117 W
Atl 112, Utah 109 W
Hold/Avoid - A middling team who have a lot of youth and have arguably outplayed expectations through the broad backside of Greg Monroe, taking full advantage of whistle happy officials and putting up around 30 and 10 a night, and about 10 free throws. Prized first rounder Fultz has done nothing and been hurt all season, so it's a credit to the new management they've been so competitive. He runs his company well, but has very little track record, so I'm not going to recommend a buy here. They aren't playing playoffs this year, so this team could be a slow burn. See what moves they make for the rest of the year and make a call on them later.

NO 92, Chi 88 L
Buy - Pre-Steph injury, Bulls were amongst the elite teams in the NLL. This is a prime example of a team taking a hit because of an injury, not because of any turmoil within the team or performance problems. They traded their next three years of picks for Klay Thompson so you know they are entirely all in. These factors make it easy to buy into the Bulls to rise back up the rankings, because they have nothing to gain from Ls and the CEO Daz seems to like performing well; seems hungry for more. Buy. They are good. No BS.

Buy - Those pesky pick hoarders, they are making it look like the absolute best way to rebuild is just to suck horribly for a few seasons, collect first rounders, maximise the value of your own and after 3-4 years, just explode onto the scene and trade and condense to get more talent in. What a life. Andrew makes savvy moves and has vision, key to any company, and the assets LAC has are staggering. They are rife with talented players in their prime and will have to worry about keeping as many as they can and not having them headhunted. I'd say this is a value buy this season alone, but for the future, you should be all over the Clips. Let your capital marinate for 12-18 months and you'll be swimming in returns.

Buy/Hold - A great future return looms if you are willing to invest now, but don't expect to see any profits for at least another season. The core is elite with potential, size and versatility and meshes perfectly with the modern game of basketball. Oh, and there's this giant point guard names Ben Simmons, you might have heard of him. He could be the next LeBron-type player, and that should be all you need to hear. They are playing for the future, but you know this already. Hold or buy and forget about the stock for a few years.

Sell/Avoid - If you got on the Magic week one, you were a braver speculator than I, but you would have tripled your capital at the very least, with Orlando taking the league by storm and Valancuinas going from 5000:1 odds as the MVP to being in pole position. Fast forward, or rewind, five weeks (depending on where you 'were', in the past or the now) and a lot has changed... Bigs were nerfed to a degree, and something about the Magic just changed. They still have a starting lineup that fits well together and can play, but they have regressed. Hopefully you got out on top, otherwise, just hold and see what happens. Maybe they can reproduce the results. The CEO javi has some history of unstable trading, so there's that...

Buy - The Brooklyn Nets... WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?! On paper they are a juggernaut, but in the wins column, they are disappointingly lacking, but they are on the rise... which brings me to my strongest advice for the day... BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY. if Tim created the Matrix, wizkid damn near renovated it, extended it and put a bloody pool on the roof. The guy is a coding genius and probably knows all of our bank records and passwords, so as if he can't figure out a 2k engine that he probably could build himself. Sell your other stocks that aren't the Blue Chippers and put it all on the Nets. Sell your wifes rings, sell your pets, don't eat for a week - just sink money into the Nets @ rank 23 on the rankings. It's criminal they are rated this low. This is bitcoin in 2010. Free money, and lots of it.

Buy - Vitticus, the CEO of Rockets, has visions for this team to play like the 2011 Magic team, surrounding a Dwight Howard like big man with versatile forwards and guards, all of whom must be able to shoot. He ain't there yet, but he is a cool customer who doesn't rush into anything. They have lost a lot of games purely because Whiteside and Hardaway (and IT) were injured. This screams as a classic 'buy low' opportunity that reaps dividends. Whiteside is no.1 in the MVP race and has only played half a season. Take that to the bank.

Hold - Miami has just completed a blockbuster deal. Before then, I would have told you to jump ship, take what you can and just forget the fact that you ever believed that glorious run would continue post-sliders change. However, they got a lot of value for what little assets they have so one has to expect they will improve and try to hover around the fringe playoff spots. They have no incentive to tank, so I'd say it's a non-glamourous 'hold' if you are on the Miami bandwagon. Favors should enjoy a much bigger role on the Heat, and it's a big mans league.

Buy - Golden State are arguably the worst performed team of the season, thus far, but there are signs that they are going to turn it around and show improvement. To be frank, it can't get any worse, so arguably you can't lose anything on this investment. They have a bit of an eclectic team but I do expect them to improve and find a few more wins. They need Saric to keep developing and Barnes to show a bit more and they can climb some of the other lowly West teams. A low expectations value buy.

Sell - Portland were one of the Cinderella stories of the first half of the season but have slowly fell back to reality, sliding out of the playoff race behind some slider changes and a barrage of injuries. Rudy Gay has been brilliant for the Blazers but he is now injured and has shown fellow managers the caution that needs to be taken when considering trades. The future is bright in Portland, but I hope you sold high at about week 5.

Sell - I honestly thought this stock wouldn't even go this high, so if you are still somehow holding onto the Wizards stock after the Klay Thompson trade, sell high, sell now and sell often. Sure they have some nice building blocks in future drafts but they will be lucky to make it to more than low 20s wins on the season, and don't own their own pick. If you have first rounders, go talk to Darko. If you don't, don't bother, and don't bother buying into them this season. Re-visit in 4-5 years.

Avoid - The team has underachieved all year and it's prized piece, the unattainable Blake Griffin continues to spend more time watching the team play than playing for it. IT was a good get for the Pacers but just means Pacers have to try and get it all to work even further. They are far down the standings and you'd have to think they can't make the playoffs. Sheed will continue to create headlines and hopefully the Pacers stock will have a brighter outlook next season.

Hold/Buy - Injuries are the main reasons for the Mavs big slide and inconsistency can be expected from a young team. No matter how quick the rebuild was, there will still be inconsistencies. Millsap has been hurt all season, but I expect the Mavericks to be better. They have made lots of moves and have a winning pedigree, and lots of up and coming talent, so if you wanted to throw some coins in the well, you might come out on top. But I won't be getting on the Mavs this year. But they shouldn't be at 30 for long. GM Rootseys value pick of the market.
