Charlotte Hornets - Power Ranking

Week Rank Rating Team Record Comment
20 5 86 Cha 9-2 The Hornets may have incurred a giant lux tax bill and now sit in the negative in terms of GM points, but it was likely worth it. Another top Eastern Conference contender, the Hornets finished in third place but look to wrest the EC title away from other top contenders. The absence of Jamal Murray really, um, stings, though.
19 6 84 Cha 9-2 The twin tower combo of Embiid and Kristaps is a matchup nightmare. Those two combine for 38 ppg, 27 rpg and 5 bpg.
18 7 86 Cha 9-2 The Hornets are another eastern conference team with a great offense and they have been a consistent threat all season long. The fact they are playing this well on offense without star point guard Jamal Murray goes to show how deep and talented this roster is. The duo of Joel Embiid and Kristaps Porzingus has been extremely difficult to stop and will be a true riddle for defenses to figure out as the playoffs begin shortly.
15 5 77 Cha 8-2 Charlotte were on a 9-game winning streak spanning a month from late April to late May. They're 6-3 in the ensuing nine games but those three losses (76ers, Bucks, and Pacers) were to the teams the Hornets want to be equal to or better than come playoff time.
14 1 111 Cha 10-1 There’s a new #1 this week. Despite the injury to star Jamal Murray too. The Hornets’ top 6 guys makes it so an injury does not put them out of contention. They went on a great run last year and plan to do the same this year too. Embiid could miss some time which would definitely hurt, but this team seems bound to win a championship sometime soon if everything falls right.
13 3 95 Cha 9-1 The top 6 on this team is something else, Murray being injured hurts their chances this season, but the team is still great. They have some good rotation players that can fill in while the starters can still be dominant. It will be interesting to see how they do come playoff time.
12 4 82 Cha 8-3 The Hornets have lost Jamal Murray for the season, but this team is still very dangerous without him. Charlotte has 6 players ranked in the NLLs top 100. This team will look to make some noise come playoff time if everyone else stays healthy.
11 12 42 Cha 5-5 Pretty much ZERO trades this season. Gm is send offers away, but for now nothing happened.
10 7 73 Cha 7-4 The Hornets enter week 11 without their two best players. Ingram has a toe injury but should return in week 12, Embiid still has a ways to go. The team however has stayed competitive in Embiid’s absence, with Kristaps sliding over to the 5 and averaging 17/5/4
9 4 97 Cha 9-2 Charlotte is holding on to its contender status by the skin of its teeth. They may need a shake-up to push them up to the level of Philly and Milwaukee. The regular season will be kind to them, the playoffs maybe not so much.
8 1 116 Cha 11-1 Charlotte has heard enough of the noise that they’re not QUITE on the level of the other top teams in the league. The fact that they are 25-4, yet only have the 5th best record in the league is insane, but Digga’s often injured twin-tower frontcourt has been experiencing a healthy season for the most part-to-date, as KP and Embiid are leading the charge for an ultra-talented and deep team.
7 5 104 Cha 10-2 The Hornets are also very deep, but they've had some losses against the top 3 teams. Should that call into question their ability to win it all? Not really, playoffs are all about tinkering to match your opponent. The Hornets may have 4x as many losses as MIL/PHI but that's only 4 losses.
6 6 79 Cha 8-3 Charlotte is having a great year, but something seems a bit off. Embiid is not as good of a year, but the bigger problem is with Kristaps who is not even averaging half the point he did a year ago. This may be a result of the engine, and the Hornets have a lot of time to figure it out. Michael Porter Jr has taken a hit on scoring though he seems to have a great impact on the game still. The luxury tax is -118 so there could be a trade, and they could stay put. Charlotte still sit 3rd in the east as contenders.
5 5 82 Cha 8-2 After losing their first game CHA rattled off 11 straight wins. Since, things have gotten a bit murkier as CHA has gone 7-3 in their last 10. For the rest of the league that'd be great, but for a team anchored by Embiid, KP, and BI some might consider this underachieving. The teams losses have come from mostly elite teams in 2 losses to Philly, 1 loss to MIL, and 1 loss to the Pacers, though these are the types of team they will need to beat come the post season to achieve any success beyond what the past couple of years have yielded.
4 5 87 Cha 8-1 Kristaps' has taken a big hit in scoring this season, and it could be a result of the engine. A dropoff of nearly 16 points is unheard of, and Embiid has even taken a hit on his numbers. The team is winning games, and have only lost to Philadelphia twice. A lot of their wins have been blowouts, although Charlotte ended up being blown out by the 76ers just recently. The playbooks may need a little tinkering, but this could be just a result of the engine as we have seen the favoring of guards more than big men this time around.
3 3 100 Cha 9-1 It was said recently that Charlotte seem to have lost a step...I'd hate to see what they were meant to be like if 9-1 and 3rd in the power rankings is losing a step! The game has taken a slight turn away from the middle man, but the Hornets have players all over the court in spades and another 6 guiys inside the top 100 ESPN. The rest are definite role players, but they know their role and they are effective for many various reasons at each position so the Hornets look just as potent from where I sit as ever. The cash cow came in over the summer, and they now hold one of the largest luxury tax bills in the league, but they are going to ride that cash deep into the playoffs again this year.
2 3 69 Cha 6-1 After the opening game loss against the powerhouse Sixers, the Hornets have reeled off six straight, including a 93 point win against the T-Wolves. Yes, you read that right. Though the loss against Philadelphia might have brought them down to earth a bit, Charlotte remains a top contender in the Eastern Conference and the league.
1 9 30 Cha 3-1 With their only loss being to Philly, the Hornets are looking to repeat their success from last year. Joel, K-por and the gang are still overpowering the lesser foes. We would like to see if this keeps up against the rest of the elite of the East.
