NLL Insider - Draft Grades

by pennywise , updated on Tuesday, July 09 2013, 12:18 am EST

NLL draft grades are going to fall under heavy scrutiny, since there has been much debate on the strength of this draft class. We will not be giving grades to anyone that traded picks away and has no rookie rights. We are only going to grade the teams on the rights of the players they have right now.
B Kelly Olynyk(#16), DeShaun Thomas(#49) Atl did well to address their glaring weakness, other than multiple injuries, which was their lack of frontcourt depth. Olynyk will get lots of minutes with the NBA Celtics, so hopefully that translates to the NLL. Thomas is a player without a true NBA position, too small for PF, too slow for SF. However, DeShaun can score and similarities between him and last year’s Sullinger are very visible.

A Anthony Bennett(#3), Michael Carter-Williams(#8) Bennett will immediately start for the Bulls, as they were in dire need of a PF. MCW is an enigma, many think he will be great, but some feel he’s just not an NBA PG. Only time will tell. The important thing is that Chicago filled 2 glaring needs at PF and PG.
C Solomon Hill(#29), Joffrey Lauvergne(#59) Hill will likely backup LBJ, as the Cavs still are looking for that bench depth they continually seem to lack, not like it hurt them after winning back to back NLL championships. Joffrey is a probable Euro-Stash big.
A- No players.
A Cody Zeller(#10), Shane Larkin(#19), Mike Muscala(#34), Arsalan Kazemi(#56) Denver did well to get the #4 overall NBA pick in Zeller way down at #10. Larkin will likely vie for the starting job. Muscala is a project that has high upside. Kazemi could end up being a steal that late. He’s way more athletic than given credit for, and will be playing on the NBA Sixers, who look to tank for Wiggins in 2014!
C+ Pierre Jackson(#39) 1 pick only, but it was used to fill a need. Jackson is a high energy PG, though smallish by NBA standards. He could amount to something, but if not, he was only a 2nd rounder anyway.
B Reggie Bullock(#25), Gorgui Dieng(#27), Ray McCallum(#43) With the strong probability of losing key players in FA, GM WALLrus set about trying to rebuild the Warriors. Bullock is a good SG to pair with Deng. Dieng is a defender, but raw and may take time to adjust to the NBA level. McCallum is a solid pick in the 2nd round.
B- Jeff Withey(#38) Withey falling to 38 must have made GM Dare’s eyes light up. Even though this was consistent with how he went in the NBA, there was noticible buzz about him leading up to draft night. Withey has the ability to be a solid defensive C in the NLL.
B Shabazz Muhammad(#11), Jamaal Franklin(#22), Tony Mitchell(#24), Grant Jerrett(#48), Raul Neto(#50) Bazz had his stock fall all year, but he was originally slated to be the #1 pick this year. His game should suit Indiana quite nicely. Bazz has the NBA frame and can score. Franklin and Mitchell seemed to be picked too high, possible reaches for GM Sheed, as they went 41 and 37 in the NBA. Lots of questions surround those 2. Jerrett is a project, but at #48, that’s a worthwhile chance. Neto is a likely Euro-stash.

C Mason Plumlee(#26), Carrick Felix(#45), Romero Osby(#53), Alex Oriakhi(#57) Pretty ho-hum draft for the Lakers. Yes, Mason fills a need. Yes, the other guys all do too. But there really is no big potential star here. Mason is projected to be a role player at best. The 2nd rounders are just that, 2nd rounders. Who knows if they will be on the team. I like what he did with what he had, but I feel GM Greenmig wanted to get higher in the draft and just could not make it happen.

A- Kentavious Caldwell-Pope(#9), Giannis Antetokounmpo(#20), Steven Adams(#21), Archie Goodwin(#23), Marko Todorovic(#52) GM BadWolf ended up with the most 1st rounders this year, 4 in all. Pope will be a great addition, as Wolfie has had to use Westbrook or Jrue as a starting PG, playing them out of position. Now he has a legit SG to play. Giannis is a possible Euro-stash with HUGE upside. Adams falling to 21 is a steal. Goodwin is another true SG that should help stretch the floor. Marko who?
A Nerlens Noel(#4), Otto Porter(#7), Allen Crabbe(#28) Surprisingly, GM Javijoe didn’t self destruct on draft day. Even though he sabotaged his team by trading away core players, he had a relatively great draft. Noel was supposed to be the #1 overall, but injuries saw him slide. Porter at 7 is an outright steal. He is one of the few players that should have an immediate impact on his team. Crabbe was considered the best shooter in the draft this year. 3 1st rounders may help Javi, as long as he can stay out of his own way!
B+ Tim Hardaway, Jr(#17) With the probability of Nick Young moving on, Hardaway, Jr is a great addition. A solid shooting guard that was undervalued in college, mostly due to playing on a team that will have 4 starters in the NBA eventually, Tim should see ample time with the Pelicans. He is also a great ball handler and solid passer.

D+ Dennis Schroeder(#13), Sergey Karasev(#14), Isaiah Canaan(#31), Ricardo Ledo(#32), Nate Wolters(#33), Alex Abrines(#35), Erick Green(#37) OKC had the most draft picks this year, even though many were 2nd rounders. Schroeder is a PG that everyone has raved about and should come in and take over the starting job. Karasev is likely to stay in Europe 1 more year, but will contribute once coming Stateside. After that, I see major concerns regarding the Thunder’s draft. Everyone else he drafted is a PG/SG or combo guard. Once he got his PG of the future in Schroeder, GM Nenjabin should have focused on other positions. Andre Roberson, Jeff Withey, Mike Muscala, Rudy Gobert were all available, but the Thunder passed. After moving most of the veterans on the team, if you are gonna rebuild in the draft, you gotta try to get players at multiple positions to help with that. Maybe he can turn some of these similar players into young players that play DIFFERENT positions.

B+ Ben McLemore(#1), Glen Rice, Jr(#30), Rudy Gobert(#36), Erik Murphy(#42) B-Mac has the highest upside of any player in this draft, minus Noel. GM VT has already gotten a slew of trading offers, but I don’t see him moving Ben. Rice is a good later pick, as he was already proven in the D-League, hopefully he does well in the NBA. Gobert is a player that has BUST written all over him, but VT hopes he can be a Manute Bol, Gheorghe Muresan type for a few years, a backup shot blocking C. Murphy was one of the best available when Philly called his number.
D- James Ennis(#47) 1 pick late in the 2nd isn’t going to really help a team. Ennis has potential, but comes from a lesser college division, so he didn’t play against elite competition.
B+ Lucas Noguiera(#15) Be-be may play this year, but GM DJDrew took a flier on a 7 footer that he hopes pans out. At 15 he was one of the best bigs left, with a ceiling of NeNe. Can’t be all that bad right?
A Alex Len(#12), Andre Roberson(#41), Nemanja Nedovic(#44), Ryan Kelly(#46), Janus Timma(#58) Not only does Sac add Len, a C with huge potential, but he also goes out and gets 2 NBA 1st rounders in the mid 2nd in Roberson and Nedovic. All those that passed on Andre may be kicking themselves in a few years. Kelly and Timma are players he hopes make rosters. Nemanja is likely to stay overseas 1 year, but has solid value.
B Tony Snell(#18), Colton Iverson(#54) Snell fits a need for SA, who has been playing Tony Allen out of position at SF. Prince is getting older, so Snell may see lots of action early. Iverson is a 7 footer that late in the draft, any GM would take a flier there.
N/A No players.
A Victor Oladipo(#2), C.J. McCollum(#5), Livio Jean-Charles(#40), Lorenzo Brown(#51), Peyton Siva(#55), Bojan Dubljevic(#60) Another team with lots of draft picks, GM Merencio filled two big needs at PG and SG with his 1st 2 picks. Both players should come in and contribute immediately. They are both in great situations in the NBA. It’s likely they will become starters in Utah before season’s end. Livio is a Euro-stash with loads of potential, a huge steal at #40. The others are just roster fillers.
A Trey Burke(#6) Arguably the best PG in the draft, Burke was the consensus POY in the NCAA. GM Darko has been quite open about his disdain for his current PG, Burke will likely take the starting job on Day 1.
