NLL Insider - Team by Team: Miami Heat

by vt, updated on Wednesday, July 10 2013, 05:27 pm EST

2012-2013 Finish: 66-16

Season Highlight

The Heat continued their strong run this season, finishing with the second best NLL record of all time. GM Tmac turned this once-floundering franchise into a complete and utter powerhouse. Just three years ago, the Heat finished dead last. This success story should dispel the whole "rich get richer" current that has been running around the league lately. Sixteen losses is pretty amazing; that means half the league couldn't beat the Heat. The season capped off with a sweep against the Philadelphia 76ers in the semi-finals.

Season Lowlight

The Heat couldn't sustain the momentum after taking out the Sixers, losing in four games to Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Conference Finals. All that hard work, undone in just four games. The season-long feud with the Phoenix Suns also got ugly at times, casting a shadow over an otherwise magical season. Also, that asterisk comment was kinda obnoxious.

Best Trade

The Indiana Pacers send Tim Duncan to the Miami Heat. The Miami Heat send Lamar Odom to the Indiana Pacers. The Miami Heat send a 1st-Rounder (Mia) to the Indiana Pacers.

The Heat made a handful of good deals, but this one was probably the best. A year ago, many of us thought that Tim Duncan was on his way down. However, Duncan proved there was life left in the tank and helped the Heat torch the competition, averaging 23.2 ppg. The price? A washed up Lamar Odom and a late 1st rounder. Though the trade may say more about Indiana GM Sheed than Tmac, this was a very strong deal for the Heat and a great way to kick off the season.

Worst Trade

The Heat didn't make any deals that hurt the team during the season.

Other Notable Trades

The Charlotte Bobcats send Ryan Anderson to the Miami Heat. The Chicago Bulls send Elton Brand to the Miami Heat. The Miami Heat send Tyson Chandler to the Charlotte Bobcats. The Miami Heat send James Johnson to the Chicago Bulls. The Charlotte Bobcats send a 2nd-Rounder (Cha) to the Chicago Bulls. The Miami Heat send a 2nd-Rounder (Mia) to the Chicago Bulls.

Ryno found a second life in Miami, stepping into the power forward position and confusing many of the slower, more physical players at the same position. Tyson Chandler didn't do much this season, so another ace in Tmac's hand here.

The Golden State Warriors send Bradley Beal to the Miami Heat. The Golden State Warriors send Jeff Green, Derrick Williams and Draymond Green to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Miami Heat send Andre Iguodala and Greivis Vasquez to the Golden State Warriors. The Miami Heat send Jason Thompson to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Minnesota Timberwolves send Drew Gooden and Jarvis Varnado to the Golden State Warriors. The Minnesota Timberwolves send Brook Lopez and Kevin Jones to the Miami Heat. The Minnesota Timberwolves send a 1st-Rounder (LAL) and 2nd-Rounder (Min) to the Golden State Warriors.

Take a look at this monster. GM Javijoe more or less handed Tmac the championship with this deal. Knowing full well that Andre Iguodala would be hitting the free agency hard, Tmac turned him (and superfluous floor general Greivis Vasquez) into one of the most dominant centers in the game and an up-and-coming rookie shooting guard. It is rumored that Tmac has collected 99 GM points to bring Iggy back in the coming season. And what did GS and MIN get in this deal? Screwed.

Best FA Signing

P.J. Tucker- The Heat didn't chase any big name free agents, but Tucker more than earned his minimum salary coming in off the bench.

Worst FA Signing

Andris Biedrins- This guy is a total waste of space. He didn't even last three months on the Heat before Tmac released him.

Star

Tim Duncan- Although the Heat shipped him off to Dallas following the season, Duncan was the heart and soul of the club. Averaging 23.2 ppg and 7.1 rebounds, Duncan absolutely dominated in his only season in Southern Florida.

Surprise

Ryan Anderson- Lots of people snickered when Anderson got a large deal two years ago. But Ryno proved to be worth the money, hitting 48% of his field goals and 40% of his three-pointers. Add in 11.8 ppg and 6.3 rpg, and you're seeing Miami's secret weapon right here.

Goat

Royce White- What a headache! What a headtrip! He didn't play in one game this season. Miami should probably give him away instead of wasting another season on his antics. Luckily, Pennywise was there to distract the team from this guy's issues.

Draft Report Card

The Heat ended up with no draft picks this season.

Looking to the Future

The Heat will be at a crossroads when next season begins. With Duncan gone, the team will be relying on Lopez and Stephen Curry to step it up. The team is also amassing GM points that Tmac will pair with his good record to land at least one star. But who will it be? Iggy? Josh Smith? The team definitely needs shooting guard help, but the bench is starting to look a little thin....

Upcoming Free Agents

Stephen Curry- Curry is a restricted free agent that will indubitably sign an extension with the Heat.

Elton Brand- If the Heat can coax Brand back for cheap, he will be a good asset off the bench.

Jarrett Jack- Jack will likely test the free agency waters in the hope of landing a starting gig with another team. However, with Vasquez gone, he will have more minutes in Miami. Jack will likely be too much money, though.

Hedo Turkoglu- GM Tmac has talked about re-signing the Turkish player. But for a $12 million asking price, we all know that he is bluffing.

Donte Greene- Could be worth a flier if he agrees to come back.

Willie Reed- He likely won't find a team before the next season starts.
