NLL Insider - Now That's Service!

by vt, updated on Friday, June 21 2013, 09:26 pm EST

We love to emulate the NBA here in the NLL, but let's face it - there are a few areas where we diverge from the Big Show. The biggest difference has to be the non-stop trading many of us do. Some GMs flip entire rosters multiple times in a season. Hey, that's part of the fun of being in the league, but for some others keeping a player for many years (through good times and bad times) is also part of the fun, especially if you drafted him. This Insider will focus on the players who have been with their teams for five or more seasons. Enjoy!

Nazr Mohammed- Atlanta Hawks - 11 years - If someone told us 11 years ago that Nazr Mohammed would be the last player to stick with his original NLL team, we would have been incredulous. Guys like Jason Kidd (who was with the Nets for years) and Dirk Nowitzki hung around for a good, long time, but Nazr is the last man standing. If you look at his player page it's straight ATLs down the board. His contract expires again this summer. Will the era finally end?

Dwyane Wade- Brooklyn Nets- 10 years- Wade has been with the Brooklyn Nets even longer than GM Proid. He's been with the Brooklyn Nets longer than they've been the Brooklyn Nets. Although he was drafted by HOU, Wade has played 99% of his career for the Nets (check out this doozy - NJ trades Jason Collins, Kerry Kittles and a 1st-Rounder (NJ) to Hou for Kelvin Cato, Dwyane Wade and a 2nd-Rounder (Hou)). Wade has another year on his contract and there is no chance Proid moves him. But when that player option comes up, will Wade remain loyal or finally fly the coop?

Josh Smith- Philadelphia Sixers- 9 years- Josh Smith always seems like he wants a trade. He's spent his entire nine year career in Philly. Will this be the end? Rumor has it that neither side wants a part of the other in the fall. Smith could become one of the biggest FAs this coming season and the Sixers could be due for a financial break with his large contract coming off the books.

Andrea Bargnani- Boston Celtics- 7 years- Although the new GM is trying to move Bargnani like the plague, the Italian big man actually has his roots dug deep in Beantown. Part of the reason is no one wants to trade for the oft-injured player who appeared in 30 games this season and a measly 16 the year before. It's hard to accrue fan loyalty when all you do is sit on the bench in a suit. Bargnani is signed for another two years. I wouldn't be surprised if he remains with the Celts for both.

Ronnie Brewer- New York Knicks- 7 years- Of all the Knicks, would you believe that Ronnie Brewer is the one with longest tenure? He came over with Rudy Gay in the infamous Adam Morrison trade. Gay is long gone, but Brewer is still in town. With his contract up and his basketball skills down, will Dunadan re-sign Brewer for nostalgia reasons?

Paul Millsap- New York Knicks - 7 years- Probably not, but if New York loses Paul Millsap, it will sting. A second round steal, Millsap has played his entire career for the Knicks. There is a chance he won't be there after this season, but something makes me believe that Dunadan will find a way to trade for the big man's services back in NY.

Spencer Hawes- Dallas Mavericks- 6 years- Hawes is one of those quiet players who gets out there and does his job. Maybe that's why it's a surprise that the big man has been a Mavs uniform for six years now. Like Mohammed, Hawes isn't flashy but knows how to play beneath the net. Could he become the league's next Mo?

Carmelo Anthony- Dallas Mavericks - 6 years- Star players fly around this league like bats in Gotham City. Anthony is one that has found a home for good in Dallas. A true superstar, Anthony did some shuttling around in the beginning of his career until he and Smokey became a match made in heaven. And when you've been playing on the same court as someone for more than a half a decade, it's no surprise that Melo and Hawes have developed a rhythm. Let's hope for six more years in Dallas!

Dwight Howard- Denver Nuggets - 6 years- Is it me or does it seem like every year Nick turns into Darko around this time of year and freaks that Dwight is going to leave him with nothing but a Rocky Mountain High? Surprising as it is to say, Howard has been in Denver for six years. It seems like yesterday when Nick wrestled him away from the Suns. Now, Nick has finally gone through puberty and Dwight is still in town. But guess what?! There are rumors that he is outta Denver. We doubt it.

Joakim Noah- Memphis Grizzlies- 6 years- GM Rasho publicly denounced his star center this season and said he would trade Noah. The season has ended and Noah is still in town. Six years i a long time, but Noah is so good and so young, the Grizz would be foolish to part ways with him now.

Kevin Durant- Toronto Raptors- 6 years- Homegrown talent doesn't get better than this. The Raptors drafted Durant and turned him into the face of their franchise. In turn, he brought them a championship. This affair won't end anytime soon!

Derrick Rose- Atlanta Hawks- 5 years- Although didn't play this season, Rose is one of the few rookies who survived four years with his original team and then re-upped to hang around. Rumor has it that GM Houndy was close to moving Rose to Detroit last season. Maybe Rose will stick around with the team that gave him his start!

Roy Hibbert- Chicago Bulls- 5 years- The DPOY is the ground zero of Chicago's tank and rebuild project. He is a good first step, finishing out his rookie deal and then re-upping. Chicago has been pelted with trade offers over the years for Hibbert, but GM Dazman has remained true to his center. He has the chance to truly become the first franchise player in Chi-town since MJ.

Russell Westbrook- Milwaukee Bucks- 5 years- Many of us remember that fateful draft day when the Orlando Magic traded away the rights to Westbrook for Jerryd Bayless. Bayless has bounced from team to team (and finally came into his own) while Westbrook has turned into a start for Bucks. The big question: would Bayless still be here, five years later, if the trade never happened?

Kevin Love- Sacramento Kings - 5 years- All you need is Love. At least that what's Sacramento fans think. A local favorite, Love survived his rookie contract with no trade and signed up for a large extension. He hasn't played much lately, but the Kings have no intention whatsoever to move him.
