NLL Insider - Wolves @ Spurs (Games 1&2)

by dunadan, updated on Friday, May 19 2017, 08:30 pm EST

After dropping game one in rather embarrassing fashion, the Spurs have managed to halt the Wolves' playoff winning streak at 5 by taking game two by two points.

Teague, who had earlier missed a three, had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, after the Spurs let an 8-point lead evaporate to two in the last two minutes. But he couldn't get to the basket against Conley's tight D, and finally missed a contested jumper.

They still have to take one in Minnesota to take back home-court advantage, but after the last win, this looks much more possible than a couple of days ago.

The Wolves lit up the scoreboard in game one. They scored 127 points, again led by 20+ from George and Warren, and double digit scoring from Williams and Robinson from the bench. Davis led the Spurs with 41/14 on 17-28 shooting and they did amass 113 themselves, but that wasn't close to making things interesting.

Veteran David West was a surprise starter at center in game one and did outperform Tyson Chandler in regards to individual stats, but he didn't prove to be the right partner for Davis up front.

Fast-forward to game two. Davis moved to center and Trey Lyles re-entered the starting five. Boy did he have an impact. The young fellow shot 9-17 from the field, including 3-9 from downtown, creating lots of room for Davis to operate inside. The Brow was 11-18 from the field and shot 11 free-throws, making 9 of them. That's 52 efficient points from a balanced front-court.

Pat Beverly matched up with Avery Bradley at shooting guard in game two, another change from game one. He didn't do very well, finishing with five points against Bradley's 15. Conley fared even worse offensively, his only two points coming off free-throws.

The Spurs bench was another key factor for the win in game two. They reversed roles with the Wolves, having three double-digit scorers in Barton, Miles and Alan Williams.
