NLL Insider - Finals GM Interview

by spudspace, updated on Monday, June 05 2017, 01:31 pm EST

Game 1 is in the books, and the Knicks took the game.  It was a close game throughout, and the Spurs had the advantage early.  Let's see what the GM's were thinking.

Question #1:  Both of your benches really didn't contribute a lot.  I know the starters are the main scorers, but 20 points and under from both teams?  Is this a concern for you?

Leeroy:  It is a concern for us, we rely on Barton's contribution as we usually lack a consistent 3rd scorer in our starters unless Conley really gets going.

Dunadan:  As long as they play the Spurs even, I’m fine with the subs not scoring that much. Of course, it would be nice if they did break out, like they did a couple of times earlier.

Question #2:  Davis and Embiid had 5 fouls.  Leeroy, is this something you are worried about?  Tim, is this a strategy or just luck?

Leeroy:  If it impacts their playing time it is a big worry. Thankfully it didn't really here, If Davis is benched with foul trouble we generally struggle to win games.

Dunadan:  That was plain luck. Early on it looked like Dwight was gonna be the one who would be in foul trouble. When Joel picked up his fifth, I was screaming at my guys to attack him. They didn't. Same with AD. Their minutes were not affected down the stretch as Pop kept them in and just let them play.

Question #3:  Ingles outplayed Harkless by a lot.  Do you expect this to continue?

Leeroy:  I am expecting Irving, Harden and Millsap to get theirs for the most part no matter what I do. Mo has been one of our best performers on defense for the season and if he can't keep Joe quiet then this series will be over pretty quickly.

Dunadan:  Joe had an efficient night, feeding of Kyrie and James. He doesn't force things and mostly takes good shoots. Mo didn't get many opportunities tonight with Conley in attack mode. Things can go totally different tomorrow.

Question #4:  Beverley ended up starting this game.  Will this continue?  Does having a shorter player on Harden make you happy Tim?

Leeroy:  Harden is a tough matchup obviously. Lee has the size but is not as talented defensively as Beverley. Also, we thought Lee could bring some extra offense off the bench but that wasn't to be. I think I run with this lineup for game 2 and see what happens, we weren't exactly blown away this game.

Dunadan:  Short or not. Bev is a pest on defense and likely is the most physical guy on the Spurs. I'm sure James would second that.

Question #5:  The Knicks almost doubled up the Spurs in foul shots.  Do you expect this trend to continue throughout the series?

Leeroy:  Can I just say that the Knicks got some good home cooking from the refs?

Dunadan:  Well, it wasn't quite that bad. 27-18 before the late fouls to stop the clock. But we made a concerted effort to minimize fouling, which also gave up some uncontested shots for the Spurs.

Last Thoughts?

Leeroy:  No Comment

Dunadan:  We were really lucky that Beverly missed those last three shots. Not sure why Popovich went to him with the game on the line. There big three were on fire.
