NLL Insider - No Throne For Kings in 2017

by frahminator, updated on Saturday, June 03 2017, 05:01 am EST

San Antonio, TX - The Spurs looked to close out the Western Conference Finals at home in Game 5 of their series against Sacramento. The Kings gave Taj Gibson the starting nod at power forward over James Johnson, while the Spurs went with their standard lineup.

The Spurs were able to open up a 16-12 lead, but Reggie Jackson had a conventional three point play to get the Kings to 16-15. Anthony Davis would respond with his own bucket from the top of the key and then an offensive rebound dunk. Davis had 16 of San Antonio's first 20!

Gerald Green had a MONSTER dunk at the 3:01 mark to pull Sacramento within 3 at 23-20. He then added a pair of free throws to close the gap to one. Collison would score a layup to give Sacramento the lead. The Spurs reserves would get a couple of buckets before Batum hit a buzzer beater. The Spurs would lead 29-28 at the first break.

Gibson would help the Kings regain the lead, but Joel Embiid would answer right back. Embiid's hustle brought him a couple of offensive rebounds and a blocked shot as well in the quarter. San Antonio opened up a five point lead with about 7:20 to go, then extended it to seven on a Davis dunk.

The Brow has 23 of the team's 44. He has three dunks and six rebounds, while going 10-12 from the floor. A truly memorable performance shaping up for him! Another dunk from him put the Spurs up 46-37. Mike Conley then dishes to Trey Lyles for the dunk and one. The Kings were in danger at this point.

The Kings, even with Davis and Embiid taking a breather on the bench, found themselves down 56-42. Mike Conley kept his troops rolling along, driving and dishing out his ninth assist of the first hale. A Tyler Johnson three put the Spurs up a whopping 22 points at 64-42. Conley would add a free throw to make the half time score 65-42. "Rough" would be a kind way to describe the 2nd for Sacramento.

The Spurs didn't hold back as the 3rd quarter opened, taking a 73-44 lead on an 8-2 run. Embiid was up to 8 points and 3 offensive rebounds, Davis at 29 points with 9 boards. San Antonio would continue to work through their frontcourt, taking a whopping 31 point lead.

Carmelo Anthony was quiet in the first half, and would score his 6th/7th points at the 6:41 mark in the 3rd. Tyler Johnson would up his point total to 13 on a trey to move the Spurs to a 83-51 lead. The bleeding continued for the Kings.

That Anthony Davis kid? Having already picked up Defensive Player of The Year earlier in the day, he's gone 15 of 18 for 35 points to remind us of his offensive prowess. He could be shelved for the upcoming Knicks series at this point, as the Spurs are cruising towards the Finals.

The Kings would cut the lead to 24 as the 3rd quarter closed. Would it be too little too late? Would Anthony Davis somehow start missing every shot? Would Joel Embiid take a nap? Well, Joel would add a pair of free throws as the quarter closed to push the lead back to 26 at 98-72.

Reggie Jackson and Carmelo Anthony are a combined 8-of-27 entering the fourth quarter. The Kings are getting outrebounded 30-21. Just not much positive to speak of, save for maybe the play of Gerald Green. Junk time started fairly early, with the ends of both teams' benches seeing action at start of the fourth.

Tyler Johnson would reach 20 points at the 6:12 mark, and was really the 2nd best option for the Spurs today. Most of his points came when the game was still being opened up by the Spurs. He's 3-of-3 from range thus far. Johnson added another dunk at the 2:49 mark.

This series was put out of doubt before halftime. It would seem that the Kings used up their mojo the previous night in clawing their way to a win. The rough end to the season clearly takes nothing away from the remarkable season that the team had in winning the Pacific Division and reaching these Western Conference Finals.

For the Spurs, this squad will have a chance to face the star-studded Knicks in a rematch of the first NLL Finals. It will be a Finals to remember: frontcourt punch vs backcourt prowess.
