NLL Insider - Team by Team: Charlotte Bobcats

Team by Team: Charlotte Bobcats
2010-2011 Finish: 40-42

What went bad

Still reeling from the poor management of departed GM Xilca, the Bobcats entered the season without a skipper and without much hope. Very little changed for this sad squad, but a flicker of hope that guttered throughout the season was finally snuffed out in the most cruel of ways.

Luckily, the team's cornerstone LaMarcus Aldridge agreed to a contract extension, cementing him as the identity of the team. Since everyone else was locked up by contract (except Rodney Carney), the team didn't change much. There was one league-mandated deal where the team traded Jamal Crawford to the Thunder for Antonio McDyess, Craig Smith, James Johnson and Toney Douglas in a push to build up the bench. Keith Bogans and Eddie House signed on, as well and so began the season.

What went worse

The Charlotte Bobcats exploded out of the gate, kicking some butt in the early part of the season. But as fatigue and reality set in, the team sank. Combined with a last minute push by the Washington Wizards, the Cats finally fell just short of making the playoffs. If they had a GM, they probably would have made it.

Stars

- LaMarcus Aldridge, FC-

Aldridge is not only one of the best forwards in the league, he is also one of the few bright spots on this Charlotte roster. He played in all 82 games and health has never been an issue for him. He and Nene have formed a special bond, one that may alter Bobcats ball forever.

- Lamar Odom, F –

Odom may have played the entire season out of position at SF, but the player is one of the reasons the Bobcats put up a fight this season. Although this was his worst season statistically-speaking, he did help Aldridge raise the bar of play. Could be interesting trade bait if the team decides to move him to a squad that needs a power forward.

Goats

- Michael Redd –

All we can say here is thank god that Redd's contract has ended. Charlotte should let him walk. And use the space to sign someone good.

Looking to the future

With Redd off the books, the Bobcats have some money to spend this offseason. If they can get Nene, that would be great for them, but rumor has it the big man is looking to play elsewhere. If the team had a GM, trading Odom would be the right thing. But they don't. Douglas will be fine as the starting PG, but the team also really needs to get a starting SG. And a bench. And amnesty Andres Nocioni if possible. Yes, they need to do a lot of work.

The draft may help them a little. At the 13th pick, the team selected shooting guard Kawhi Leonard. However, the athletic forward has Odom in the way of getting serious PT. In the second round, the Cats selected Kansas guard Josh Selby who does have offensive skills and potential. He may see time off the bench. They also drafted Milan Macvan at 58th but he will remain in Israel.
