NLL Insider - Team by Team: Brooklyn Nets

by pennywise , updated on Tuesday, October 11 2016, 12:58 am EST

2015-16 Finish: 26-56. 13th in the Eastern Conference

Season Highlight:

Hard to have a season highlight with a lottery pick, especially when your lottery pick is owned by someone else, but when it means you have DeMarcus Cousins on your team, that's the highlight all to itself.

 Season Lowlight:

Having to watch the 15/16 season, especially when more was expected of them this past year.  Nothing is more frustrating than watching a rebuilding team under perform.

Best Trade:

The Brooklyn Nets send Dante Cunningham and Avery Bradley to the Detroit Pistons. The Detroit Pistons send Eric Bledsoe to the Brooklyn Nets.
The Brooklyn Nets send a 1st-Rounder (NO) to the Detroit Pistons. The Detroit Pistons send a 1st-Rounder (Phi) to the Brooklyn Nets.

Avery Bradley is a solid contributor, but doesn’t seem to have the high reward that would accompany the risk associated with a player of Bledsoe’s pedigree.  If Bledsoe can stay healthy, he’s a top level 2k guard, but……can he stay healthy?

Worst Trade:

The Brooklyn Nets send a 2nd-Rounder (Bkn) to the Orlando Magic.
The Brooklyn Nets trade -5 GM points. The Orlando Magic receive 5 GM points.

I don’t like this trade based solely off the price of that 2nd.  If this was part of a previous trade, then my apologies, but a Bkn pick right now is mid 30s and worth far more than just 5 GM.

Other Notable Trades:

The Milwaukee Bucks send Kyle O'Quinn to the Brooklyn Nets.
The Brooklyn Nets send a 1st-Rounder (Utah) to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Milwaukee Bucks send a 1st-Rounder (Bos) to the Brooklyn Nets.

Swapping late 20s picks and get rewarded with a back up big man.

The Brooklyn Nets send Jarrett Jack and Andre Roberson to the Boston Celtics. The Boston Celtics send Al-Farouq Aminu to the Brooklyn Nets.
The Brooklyn Nets send a 1st-Rounder (Bkn) to the Boston Celtics. The Boston Celtics send a 1st-Rounder (NO) to the Brooklyn Nets.

Aminu has always been a solid 2K player and can play SF or PF, great versatility.

The Brooklyn Nets send Zaza Pachulia, Ersan Ilyasova and Cedi Osman to the Denver Nuggets. The Brooklyn Nets send George Hill to the LA Lakers. The Denver Nuggets send Danilo Gallinari and Arsalan Kazemi to the Brooklyn Nets. The LA Lakers send Jarrett Jack and Jeremy Lamb to the Brooklyn Nets.
The LA Lakers send a 1st-Rounder (LAL) to the Brooklyn Nets.

This was my 2nd choice for the best trade.  Gallinari is a great player when healthy. Lamb seems to have been given up on too early and Jarrett Jack can still run the point.  All Brooklyn really gave up was ZaZa, who wasn’t playing well for them, and George Hill, who really is better as a combo guard and not really a true PG.  When Gallo is healthy, he will help space the floor with his long range shooting and open up the paint for DMC.

Then there was that crazy record breaking trade which I will not post up here, but know that the Nets got a late first for 27 GM.

 Best FA Signing:

Khris Middleton: He averaged about 14 per, and was one of the few consistent players to ALWAYS suit up for the Nets last year.

Worst FA Signing:

Josh Huestis:  Did not play 1 minute for the Nets all year.

Star:

DMC: 21 ppg and 13 boards, DMC thrived in Brooklyn as this was his best season in the NLL.  Now can Wiz get some players around him?

Surprise:

ZaZa Pachulia:  It was a tale of two teams for good ole ZaZa, as he played his way out of Brooklyn, only to find himself in the arms of the Nuggets.  Boy did he produce in Denver.

Goat:

GR3:  Glenn Robinson III never really became the young budding player that Wiz hoped for. Can he turn it around, or is GR's number up in the Big Apple?

Draft Report Card:

#28 SG Caris LeVert – Wiz trades for Jeremy Lamb only to draft the guy that is supposed to be just like him.  If Caris can get NBA playing time, he will play well for the Nets, who need that deep shooting.

#29 PF Guerschon Yabusele – Strong, but undersized PF that plays in the Draymond Green type of mold.  Is raw, but could blossom over time.

Upcoming Free Agents:

Danilo Gallinari – FA only in title, as he is fully expected to return to Brooklyn.

Jeremy Lamb – Young RFA that has potential if he can only stay on a NBA roster.

Terrence Jones – RFA that underperformed this past year.  Will still likely remain on the Nets.

Austin Rivers – RFA that improved from last year.  Have heard rumors of a possible sign and trade, but nothing certain as of yet.

Looking at the future

Wiz has taken some risks, but he has amassed a solid NLL roster.  He should be able to retain all his FA, as most are restricted and want to re-sign.  If all the risks pan out, he is easily a low seeded playoff team with a core young nucleus.  He pulled enough strings to get the BEST C in the game to his team, now he just needs to find the pieces that fit DMC and the Nets could become a playoff team, which we expect will be sooner rather than later.
