NLL Insider - Team by Team: Chicago Bulls

2015-16 Finish: 19-63

Ever since 2010/11 the Bulls could be found among the bottom three teams in a tough Eastern Conference.

But since Steph Curry's emergence into superstardom, hopes have been high. Especially last season, when he came of an NBA MVP season. There was no way but up after his Bulls finished 27-55 in 2014/15, right? Well, not really. Despite Curry suiting up for 19 out of 20 weeks, his team finished 19-63.

Season Highlight:

Halfway through the season (weeks 8 to 10), there was a stretch of incredible play from the Bulls. Daz had just traded away half his team and started four shooters around Curry. They beat the Knicks and the Sixers in consecutive games, then lost an OT to Detroit before finishing off Charlotte for their only winning week of the season. They went 2-2 for the next two weeks as well, but then things fell apart again.

Season Lowlight:

The Bulls started the season 0-7. They also dropped 14 straight from week 15 to week 17. But for GM daz the clear low-ligth was the lottery. The Bulls can be held accountable for dropping a lot of games last season, but the biggest drop, the one to pick 6, was simply bad luck.

Best Trade:

The Atlanta Hawks send a 1st-Rounder (NO) to the Chicago Bulls. The Chicago Bulls send a 1st-Rounder (Pho) and 1st-Rounder (Sac) to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Bulls managed to barter picks 14 and 16 into a top 7 pick, that netted them a budding star.

Worst Trade:

The Philadelphia 76ers send Kevon Looney and Andrew Harrison to the Chicago Bulls. The Chicago Bulls send a 1st-Rounder (Chi, 2017) to the Philadelphia 76ers.

In Daz' own words: "Its gotta happen eventually right?" The jury is still out on this one, but unless they clean up this years free-agent class, this will be a lottery pick going to Philly. It is highly unlikely Looney was worth that.

Other Notable Trades:

The Chicago Bulls send Andrew Bogut to the Sacramento Kings. The Sacramento Kings send Channing Frye and Meyers Leonard to the Chicago Bulls. The Sacramento Kings send a 1st-Rounder (Sac) to the Chicago Bulls.

This is the only deal from last season where the Bulls got lasting parts. Meyers will be around for a while and will hopefully live up to his contract and the pick part of what got them Hield.

The Chicago Bulls send Brice Johnson to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Portland Trail Blazers send Robin Lopez to the Chicago Bulls. The Chicago Bulls send a 2nd-Rounder (Tor) to the Portland Trail Blazers.

It is unclear whether this one was before or after the draft, as it is listed twice. But lets use it here. Chicago got a proven center to man the middle, who now happens to be a Bulls IRL as well.

Best FA Signing:

The only FA signings from last season, who is still around are Derrick Williams and Seth Curry. Both are locks to bolt on FA day as they are not worth spending points on. Of the others Aminu netted them a first-round pick and some warm bodies, while Neal and Barbosa were turned into second rounders.

Worst FA Signing:

Anthony Tolliver, who was just signed to get over the minimum salary. He jacked up a lot of threes during his two-week stint as a starter with the Bulls, but connected only on 24%.

Star:

Curry would win this category by default even had he sucked all season long. But, while his shooting dropped off slightly from the previous season, he still dominated with averages of 27.3/4.4/54. His 200 three-points in the NLL, barely put him into the top 10 in this category.

Goat:

The only guy who players who played the entire season with the Bulls other than Steph, are the two FAs Williams and Lil' Bro Seth. Neither can be really held accountable for the dismyal season. So who else to blame? The virtual coach? Or the GM himself?

Draft Report Card:

Unlucky in the draft lottery, the Bulls did pick twice in the lottery spots this season.

While Dragan Bender looks like a project right now, Buddy Hield seems to be the real deal. He should thrive playing next to Curry. The two are often compared and will be even more going forward, as they will now share a court every game. They might be a bit smallish as a back-court, but they will give opposing defenses fits on offense.

With a bit of patience regarding Bender, this could turn out to be a very nice draft haul.

Looking to the Future:

The Bulls clearly have a win-now superstar in Curry, but no supporting cast. Is it likely that will make him bolt? I don't see that happening. But how do you get him the supporting cast he needs within the next couple of seasons?

With Tony Allen, Thabo and Lopez they have three servicable defenders to fill out a starting five. But they clearly need a second scorer next to Curry and preferably someone bigger than 6-4. Ideal would be someone to step into the starting power forward role, or they could start Channing Frye next to a decent two-way player at small forward. With cap-space to accomodate a max-player and a pocket full of GM points, the Bulls will have options.

Upcoming Free Agents:

Meyers Leonard will be back. He's restricted and also made it known he wants to sign for over 41 million over the next 4 years.

As already mentioned Derrick Williams and Seth Curry are already gone mentally. So is Speights. Beno Udrih is still on the fence. The loyal Haslem would likely return, but is likely to be a cap-hold casualty.

Free Agents Targets:

So who will the Bulls look at with all their cap-space?

Harrison Barnes would be a nice fit, but he's restricted and the Bulls have only money for one max guy, so they wont gamble on him.

Chandler Parsons would certainly be a good fit too. He's someone who can play both sides and get into the lane to set up shooters like Curry, Frye and Hield. But there will be fierce competition for his services and he is kinda injury prone.

Former bull and frequent FA Luol Deng may be had more easily. But will Deng want to go to a rebuilding team? And does he still have enough offensive firepower to be the second scorer the Bulls need?

Evan Turner can play some small forward. He's a jack of all trades, but doesn't sound like be best fit next to Curry due to his ball domination.

Jeff Green has never lived up to expectations, but he might just be a guy who could fit with the Bulls. Like Turner he can do a little bit of everything, but could also start at the four.

Do to the cap-spike there will be other FA veterans making between 8 and 12 million, likey Joe Johnson, Jared Dudley, Mirza Teletovic and Al Jefferson. But these are all the second tier and would cost the Bulls the chance at a bigger star, unless they clear some more cap space by dumping Frye or Meeks.
