NLL Insider - Team by Team: Dallas Mavericks

by vt, updated on Monday, October 10 2016, 08:26 pm EST

2015-16 Finish: 56-26

Season Highlight:

The Mavs have been a very good organization for a very long time. Under the guidance of longtime GM Smokey, this Dallas franchise is always a contender. Once again, the Mavericks coasted to playoff glory, winning their division. They knocked out the upstart Houston Rockets in the first round, winning four games to one. If there was one highlight to the season, it was how consistently good this team is.

Season Lowlight:

The Mavericks are often overlooked when talking about the elite teams in the league. For some reason, they just aren't as feared as a Cleveland or a Lakers squad. They also didn't make it very far in the postseason. After taking care of the Rockets, the Mavericks were squashed by the Nuggets in a five game series. Losing to a lower-seeded team isn't really the best way to end the season, but it definitely happens.

Best Trade:

The Dallas Mavericks send Allen Crabbe and Trey Lyles to the San Antonio Spurs. The Dallas Mavericks send Zach Randolph and Alan Anderson to the Toronto Raptors. The Orlando Magic send R.J. Hunter to the Dallas Mavericks. The San Antonio Spurs send Louis Williams to the Dallas Mavericks. The San Antonio Spurs send Archie Goodwin to the Orlando Magic. The Toronto Raptors send Dirk Nowitzki and Shabazz Muhammad to the Dallas Mavericks.
The Dallas Mavericks send a 1st-Rounder (Dal) to the Orlando Magic. The Dallas Mavericks send a 1st-Rounder (Utah) to the San Antonio Spurs. The Orlando Magic send a 2nd-Rounder (SA) to the Dallas Mavericks. The San Antonio Spurs send a 2nd-Rounder (Orl) to the Dallas Mavericks.

The Dallas Mavericks trade -3 GM points. The Orlando Magic receive 3 GM points.

In other words, the Mavericks get Dirk, Sweet Lou, Shabazz Muhammad and R.J. Hunter for Zbo, Alan Anderson, Allen Crabbe, Trey Lyles.

Unless Lyles turns out to be a star, this is a pretty good deal for the Mavs. Dirk is still a stud and Louis Williams is like the perennial 6th man of the year. Crabbe is good, but damn did he get paid this year. Shabazz has shown flashes of brilliance.

Worst Trade:

The Mavs really didn't make any bad moves this past season.

Other Notable Trades:

The Brooklyn Nets send Kelly Olynyk to the Dallas Mavericks. The Dallas Mavericks send George Hill and Sergey Karasev to the Brooklyn Nets.

The jury is still out on this deal. Hill is a starting quality point guard while Olynyk is all potential still. If the big man doesn't live up to the hype, this could be slotted as the worst trade of the year for the Mavs.

Best FA Signing:

The Mavs didn't sign any free agents of note.

Worst FA Signing:

The Mavs didn't sign any free agents of note.

Star:

DeAndre Jordan- The center continued to dominate last season, chipping in 11.4 points per game and pulling in 13.8 boards. 1.2 blocks is pretty nice too!

Surprise:

Dirk Nowitzki- Dirk got ample minutes in his first season back in Dallas since 2009, but didn't do as much as everyone hoped. 10 points a game on 46% shooting is pretty nice, but when you're averaging 33.4 mpg, you should be doing a little more.

Goat:

Nikola Mirotic- The jury is still out on this import and after a bum first season in the NLL, ehe didn't much better during his second campaign. Starting no games and appearing in only 58,  Mirotic shot a woeful 34%, averaging just 3.7 points per game. For some reason, Smokey still has faith in this guy.

Draft Report Card:

The Mavs drafted four players this summer, but it's unlikely any will make the roster.

Ivica Zubac (#26)- They reached a little on this guy. GM Smokey likes his Euro players and rather than let the big man season overseas, he will get some time in Dallas. Don't count on him seeing the court that much, however.

Paul Zipser (#42)- The swingman will fight to make the roster. Another Euro who likely will spend more time warming the bench than actually playing.

Wang Zhelin (#59)-  The Mavs will leave the Chinese player overseas.

Abdel Nader (#60)- He will likely spend time in the D-League and if he proves something, the Mavs will call him up. Definitely won't make the 15-man roster to start the season.

Upcoming Free Agents:

Dirk Nowitzki- With a rumored $25 million payday waiting for him and a fairytale storyline of finishing his career where it started, we don't see Dirk going anywhere else but Dallas next season. The only thing that could keep them for signing him is lux tax considerations, but I bet he's back in blue and white.

Joel Anthony- Is this guy still NLL-quality? Expect him to play elsewhere.

Ray McCallum- Another marginal player. He could fill a roster spot, but the Mavs don't lose a thing letting him go.

Looking at the future

The Mavericks are poised to be good again. With a starting cast featuring Jordan, Thaddeus Young and Emmanuel Mudiay, that's a strong start. Jrue Holiday will again miss significant time as he nurses his sick wife. Lou Williams will continue to be a spark off the bench. The team could use a legit star, but who will they have to trade to get him?
