NLL Insider - The Early Trades: Pt 2

by pennywise , updated on Thursday, November 14 2013, 04:50 pm EST

PHILADELPHIA:

The Philadelphia 76ers send Pablo Prigioni and Glen Rice Jr. to the Sacramento Kings. The Sacramento Kings send Tiago Splitter to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Philadelphia 76ers send a 2nd-Rounder (Phi) to the Sacramento Kings.

-Splitter is a great hustle player and Philly got him for a rookie and a backup PG along with a 2nd.  Sixers big winners here.  Advantage – PHI

The Philadelphia 76ers send Josh Smith to the Phoenix Suns. The Phoenix Suns send DeMar DeRozan to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Phoenix Suns send a 2nd-Rounder (Pho) to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Philadelphia 76ers receive 45 GM points. The Phoenix Suns trade -45 GM points.

-Josh Smith is the better player in the deal, but DeMar has proven he can be an elite scorer in the NLL, whereas Smith has never seen his potential reached.  Phoenix was in need of getting a better PF and Smith will fit nicely.  Philly already has tons of wing scoring, but DeRozan is one of those players that most GMs would happily add to their roster.  Add the 2nd rounder and the GM points and it looks like Philly did well here.  Advantage – PHI

The Philadelphia 76ers send Ray Allen to the Toronto Raptors. The Toronto Raptors use their trade exception over $ 3,229,050. The Philadelphia 76ers trade -5 GM points. The Toronto Raptors receive 5 GM points. The Toronto Raptors send Kevin Martin to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Philadelphia 76ers use their trade exception over $ 6,500,000.

-Philly gets a top shelf scorer in Martin, even though they have tons of wing scoring.  Toronto gets a player that is older and cheaper than Martin, but does much of what Martin does.  Martin was a sign and trade, so he had to be dealt, but could Toronto have done better?  Advantage – PHI

Lots of trades for player rights….who knows??

WASHINGTON:

          Jennings trade – SEE ORLANDO

So, there it is, all the trades made so far this year.  Now we will break down the biggest winners and losers.

BIGGEST LOSERS:

#3 – UTAH- lots of player rights, but not a lot of players.  Utah is taking chances and hoping to strike it rich.  Good luck to ya!

#2 – DETROIT – In the end, Detroit gave up the best players in the deal and didn’t seem to get better by making the trades, couple that with the releasing of Okafor, and you have to wonder what they are thinking out in the Motor City.  I’m sure the biggest fear was to be over the lux cap, but there was plenty of time to address that.

#1 – GOLDEN STATE – Once again, we find ourselves scratching our heads and questioning the thought process of GM WALLrus.  There were other trades on the table that didn’t require losing that top draft pick.  Also, like GM TMac pointed out, if the Warriors would have been patient and shopped Iggy more, he would have gotten much better offers.  Miami would have likely given GS a way better offer, or so he implied.  This wasn’t even the best deal on the table when he pulled the trigger.  Either way, GS fans have to be in uproar, and it sounds like not many are renewing their season tickets this year.

BIGGEST WINNERS:

#3 – MINNESOTA – Moving players that are in decline, and replacing Danny Granger, who still hasn’t been cleared to play, with Rudy Gay was a masterful move.  Minnesota may have just gotten back into the playoff race out West with one of their better trades in years!

#2 – PHILADELPHIA – Once again, GM VT keeps adding players that would start for other teams.  VT has been a mastermind on the trade phones, turning in positive moves left and right.  Plus, with the surplus he has on wing scorers, he’s likely going to cash in near the trade deadline, when those players become gold to rival GMs.

#1 – LA LAKERS – Not only did GM Greenmig end up on the right side of the most controversial trade this season, but he also made smaller moves that some seem to overlook.  In the end, LA added Iggy, Speights and Chalmers, but did so by giving far less in value than he got in return.  The Lakers GM could have solidified a likely chance to hoist the GM of the Year trophy with his uncanny knack for being the winner in ALL of his trades.  Oh, and if that’s not enough, it’s possible that LA could see Wiggins in a Laker jersey come draft day, depending on how well the Warriors do.  Hats off to Greenmig for a stunning start to the season!

*disclaimer – many teams did great this year, as most addressed team needs in their trades.  It has been interesting thus far, as there really weren’t many teams that did poorly.  There are about 6 other teams that have an argument for being in the top 3, but there really isn’t many that can argue about for the bottom 2.
