NLL Insider - Team by Team: Phoenix Suns

2012-2013 Finish:  47 - 35

Season Highlight: With finishing season 4th in the Western conference Phoenix Suns managed to get to the Playoffs for the second time in a row. And if you are looking the names in their lineup that is where they are supposed to be, right? Well it was not so two seasons ago when they finished 13th out West. Last year they were 7th. So nice climb up for Suns.

Playing against Denver in the first round and losing in game seven can also be a thumb up for Suns and a good motivation for season 2013/14.

Season Lowlight: I can't reallyhighlight something that went wrong for Suns. Maybe it is the style that penny is leading this team. He can be a big provocator for some of the opponent GMs, but I guess this is his way of managing. And he can have an oppinion, right? Still, remember sometimes that it is only a game…Right?

Best Trade:Not really a single trade that I would go for the best one, but the whole Chauncey Billups saga. Suns got Marcus Camby and Gerald Green in return, for Billups, some GM points and a first rounder. The most important thing is that both Gerald and Marcus played a nice role in 2012/13 season for Suns and they will both be back for 2013/14 season.

Worst Trade: Looks like penny can not do a really bad trade for him. Looking into trades and I do not see one that would hit Suns in the last season.

Other Notable Trades: The Orlando Magic send Deron Williams and Garrett Temple to the Phoenix Suns. The Phoenix Suns send Shawn Marion, Brandon Jennings and Ekpe Udoh to the Orlando Magic.
The Orlando Magic trade -15 GM points. The Phoenix Suns receive 15 GM points.

Another one of some big trades that penny made. He send away the long term PG Williams for a younger Jennings. He also get a nice big men in Marion and a nice number of GM points. Both teams were happy. Maybe why this could not be the best trade for Suns is the fact that all players acquired in this trade were already traded away.

Best FA Signing: Andray Blatche signs with the Phoenix Suns for 1 year and $ 1,146,337.

Close call betwen Andray and Ersan, because they were producing big for Suns. I went for Andray because he played all 82 games and started only 5 of them, Ersan on the other side started all 77 games he played. Andray score 11 points per game and also had 5 rebounds per night. A great performance for playing only 22 minutes a game and coming from bench.

Worst FA Signing: Really no bad signings for Suns. We can say that Louis Admundson was nothing much, but who expected something from him?

Star: DeMar DeRozan with 20 points and 6 rebounds per game he was his team's leading scorer. DeMar is continuing to show nice numbers for Suns and with bigger and bigger support from his co-players Suns could do some big things in years to come. Just keep up the good work and some good things are to happen.

Surprise: Andray Blatche; no one expected that this guy will still play at this level. But he did it once again specially he was starting from the bench and with such a limited minutes. The bad thing for Suns is that he only signed for one year and is back to test FA this season. He just can't stay at the same place long.

Goat: Wesley Johnson; well, he was only a Sun in 21 games, but 5.1 points in 17 minutes isn't something a guy that was brought in to score is to cheer with. He has to do some training and step up for the club.

Draft Report Card:

Phoenix did have a few late 2nd rounders to pick in this years draft, but only James Ennis stayed as a possible sign for Suns. His length, athleticism and versatile skill set will make him a valuable reserve at the beginning of his career. The fact he can guard multiple positions is a major plus.

Looking to the Future:

Suns have a reasonably young team that could do a lot of damage in the league. Yet they have enough experience already that they should not bend in the moments that will count. Some older experienced bodies help with that too. If penny can keep most of the FAs, specially Blatche and maybe Wes Johnson, this team can came up big in 2013/14 campaign. Oh and expect some more trading from Suns to happen soon.

Upcoming Free Agents:

DeMar DeRozan – Restricted FA is a must stay for Phoenix. No chance he will be left from this team anytime soon.

Andrey Blatche – He has moved from team to team last few seasons. Will the big guy stick around and try to lead this team another step higher or not. I expect him to leave and try his luck somewhere else.

Darren Collison – A legit sub for Rajon Rondo and another RFA for Suns. Don't expect him to leave.

Wesley Johnson – With the lack of shooting contribution at Suns I can not really decide what to do with him? Maybe penny knows and we will soon know what his decision will be. I think he will give him another shot if he will have the cap space.
