NLL Insider - Seemed Like a Good Idea....02/03

by vt, updated on Tuesday, December 17 2013, 07:38 pm EST

Can you believe the NLL has been around for 11 years?! A lot of trades have taken place between then and now. In this feature, we examine trades from the 2002/03 season that might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but 11 years later proved to be bad, very bad, for one of the teams involved.

1) LAC trades Elton Brand, Lamar Odom, Quentin Richardson and Sean Rooks to Atl for Shareef Abdur-Rahim, David Anderson, Glenn Robinson and a 2nd-Rounder (Atl).

One team received a player that is still in the league, though not as dominate as in the past. The other team ended up with three guys who washed out not long after. Though not completely cut and dry awful, the Hawks ended up with a handful of players who played (and in Q-Rich’s case earned tons of extra money and GM points in free agency) while the Clippers caught Glenn Robinson at the tail end of his greatness.

2) GS trades Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, Travis Knight, to Chi for Lonny Baxter, Trenton Hassell, Jalen Rose, 2nd-Rounder (Chi).

Wow! The Warriors were getting ganked back in the early ‘00s! Although Arenas is no longer the shooting star he became (and has since unbecame), what the hell were the Warriors thinking? Jalen Rose was a really good player, but even at this time Arenas and Jamison were much, much better.

3) Sac trades Mike Bibby, Keon Clark, Hidayet Turkoglu, Gerald Wallace, to Cle for Tyrone Hill, Darius Miles, Milt Palacio, Dajuan Wagner, 1st-Rounder (Cle).

Time has knocked the luster off of this deal but just take a look at it. Yeah, but the draft pick! That draft became Zoran Planinic. Who? Mike Bibby had a good run as a starting PG, Turk was good until he decided to suck in the last year and Gerald Wallace is still a pretty good player. Who the heck did Sacremento get then?! Nothing as Dajuan Wagner busted out of the league soon after.

4) Phi trades Joe Johnson, Dan Langhi, Todd MacCulloch and a 1st-Rounder (Phi) to Den for Chris Andersen, Nene Hilario and Nikoloz Tskitishvili.

JJ wasn’t the hot rod stud he is now back in the day. At the time, it seemed like a good idea as Nene and Skita were both highly-vaunted rookies. Yeah, the Sixers wisely got out of Todd MacCulloch’s contract just as the center would go down with a neurological disease, but Skita never made good on his promise and Nene suffered from chronic injury (and testicular cancer). Meanwhile, that first round pick became David West.

5) GS trades Mike Dunleavy jr, Charlie Ward, 2nd-Rounder (GS), to Hou for Juaquin Hawkins, Glen Rice.

Golden State again. Who is Hawkins? And how much longer did Glen Rice have in the league? Man, his SON is playing for us now. At the time, Dunleavy had a ton of talent.

6) Mia trades Michael Finley, Brian Grant, a 2nd-Rounder (Mia) and a 2nd-Rounder (SA) to LAL for Kobe Bryant, Tracy Murray, Brian Shaw and Samaki Walker.

Um, what? Let’s talk about perspective. Both Michael Finley and Brian Grant were great players during their time, but even together and even with the two second rounders, they were not worth Kobe Bryant. Just what was the Lakers GM thinking when he pulled the trigger on this deal? Finley could score, but he was also somewhat one-dimensional. Grant was on his way down the drug and injury rabbit hole. Yeah, Murray, Shaw and Walker were a handful of nothing, but Bryant was and is one of the most dominant players in NLL history. Shame on the Lakers for this one.

7) Phi trades Samuel Dalembert and Keith Van Horn to Sac for Scot Pollard, Predrag Stojakovic and a 2nd-Rounder (Sac).

No wonder the Kings had such a bad period. Yeah, Dalembert is the survivor here, but Peja helped the Sixers eventually win a championship. Remember how awesome he used to be? Pollard was no slouch, either, easing the loss of Dalembert. Van Horn would soon retire and then come back and not play.

8) Phi trades Efthimios Rentzias, Kenny Satterfield and Kenny Thomas to Pho for Joe Johnson, Dan Langhi and Jake Voskuhl.

And just how did the Sixers get JJ to send him to DEN for Nene and the gang? Look at this jaw-dropper. Phoenix got WHO? This is the type of deal that should send a GM into early retirement. Or at least lead the fans to chase them out of town with pitchforks.

9) Pho trades Randy Brown, Tom Gugliotta and Amare Stoudemire to Tor for Antonio Davis, Chris Jefferies and a 1st-Rounder (Tor).

Okay, the 2002-03 Phoenix GM is not only worse than the 2002-03 Warriors GM (and the current one), but maybe one of the worst GMs in the league history. Check out this one. Antonio Davis was on his last legs, I can’t even remember Jefferies and that pick would become Mike Sweetney. Amare had a lot of buzz back then (unlike Johnson). So what’s the deal? Stupidity? He made a lot of other bad moves that year, but not bad enough to make this list.
