Nick's Mock Draft 2008 - 4th of July

Over the past few days i've been doing some research and surveying the GM's of the NLL. I sent a message to all of the GM's in the league and I asked them to give me their draft plans aswell as any other rumours that they may have heard. I told them that their rumours would remain annonymous, and i gave them the choice of telling the truth or setting a smokescreen (tactful lie). Half of the league responded, and i have quite a collection of rumours. This mock has been put together based on the compilation of rumours that i "know".

It's my goal to make the most accurate mock draft that i can, leading up to the big day. However, GM's may not share the same desire and would prefer to mask their plans by misleading the media. It's up to you whether you believe the league gossip or not.

This is the 5th year in a row i've done a mock for NLL, and it took me a great deal of time to complete, as it requires hours of work. I take care into putting myself into the position of the each team situation. I've spent time compiling and assessing all of the rumours, I've done lots of research on the players, and to cap it off putting thoughts into written analysis is the lengthiest process of it all! :) It's very fun and interesting though.

Draft day, one of the biggest annual events in NLL, will be the beginning of new era's for some teams, and a forgettable day for others. Either way, this is history in the making, folks. based on my general knowledge and the many rumours that i gathered, here's an idea of who i think could go where come draft day. Enjoy!

# Team Prospect Comments
1

Golden State

Michael Beasley
6' 8" 235 lbs
PF/SF
Congratulations to the lucky lottery winners in Golden State. This year's draft has 2 top stand-out players, and the Warriors will get first crack at either one of them. Either one of the two are worthy of being the #1 pick, so it just comes down to the preference of the GM and general franchise direction. However, the Warriors GM so far has remained silent on the topic and the pick looks to be up in air, and we likely wont find out until draft day. One thing is for sure, and that is that it will be either Beasley or Rose. Rumour has it that Sacramento has been involved in trade talks for the 1st pick involving 3rd and 4th pick. If that scenario happens then the pick is even more likely to be Beasley. But nothing is official. Back to Golden State. We can more accurately guess their pick with the knowledge that the decision will likely come down to the following factor - Does the team need a go-to scorer, or does the team need a guy to glue existing go-to scorers together? Well, the thing here is that GS could go either way, making the prediction difficult. I originally had GS picking Rose, under the notion that they already had two go-to guys in Vince Carter and Carlos Boozer, and that Rose is exactly what the team needed in order be successful. But upon learning that the team no longer had Boozer (questionably traded for young players), i'm unsure that GSW would decide to go with Rose, and leave a hole in the frontcourt. I think they might decide to go with Beasley under the notion that their PG plans are invested in Daniel Gibson. However, is Carter in their long-term plans? And is Gibson a full-time PG? These questions lean the prediction towards Rose. Tough prediction. You've got to wonder how much better their team might've been had they kept Boozer though. Carter/Boozers/Rose, would've been a trio destined for playoffs. Instead, they have a collection of young players, who may turn out just average. In any event, Golden State will come away from draft day having added a significant piece. Beasley is a potential top 10 scorer in the league, and will likely turn out to be a more athletic and prolific Zach Randolph.
2

Atlanta

Derrick Rose
6' 3" 190 lbs
PG
Atlanta find themselves in a similar position to last year's draft, picking 1 of the 2 stand-out prospects. They had 1st pick in last year's draft, but this year have the easiest draft choice of the draft - they will take whoever Golden State doesn't. Despite already having Jamal Crawford and Stephon Marbury on the roster, i think Atlanta might be secretly hoping for Derrick Rose. After having selected Greg Oden in last year's draft, Rose and Oden would make a fantastic duo, and make them 1 piece away from contention. And when you consider the age of the duo, it's just scary. After July 6th, Atlanta will have gone from the suckiest team in the NLL (a year ago), to one of the most exciting, no matter who they choose. With some savvy GM work, Atlanta could be a team to looking at contending in a few seasons. Rose, being a freshmen, is hard to truly gauge how successful he will become. But some put him in a similar boat to Chris Paul. In his prime, I think he will become something similar to Paul but with less steals and assists, and more points and rebounds.
3

Sacramento

OJ Mayo
6' 4" 195 lbs
SG/PG
You've got to feel for the GM of Sacramento, the Kevin Pritchard of NLL, who gave up the assets he had during the season to be in the position to have a top 2 pick in the draft. He took the gambles, passing along players such as Andrew Bynum and Carlos Boozer, and Deron Williams the year before. They didn't come away with a top 2 pick, but you've got to take the risks to come out big, right? Sometimes risks don't pay off. And in this case they didn't quite come out on top. But you've got to admire Sac-Town for their aggressive trade style. And hey, let's face it, Sacramento have put themselves in a drafting position that many of us would envy. Anyway, all that aside. Sacramento will select the much-hyped OJ Mayo, as they are after a go-to scorer. Mayo had been the most hyped high schooler since LeBron, who many heralded as the next superstar. But after his freshmen college season, he didn't show the complete all-round game that you would want in a superstar, and his stock dropped back down to reality. But although Mayo wont be a superstar, there's no denying his fantastic talent. Scoring is Mayo's strength, and that's what Sacramento need. Mayo's success will depend on how much he can improve his all-round game. There's a chance that Golden State could be picking here and 4th, with Kings picking 1st. But don't count on it.
4

Sacramento

Kevin Love
6' 9" 255 lbs
PF
The second consecutive pick by Sacramento. Sacramento will fill their most desperate need by picking Kevin Love - Inside Scoring. Love is the most talented inside scorer in the draft (not named Beasley), and i think he will be very successful, despite the question marks about his athletisicm.
5

Orlando

Jerryd Bayless
6' 3" 199 lbs
SG/PG
Orlando are looking for a compliment to their duo of Tracy McGrady and Yi Jianlian, and that player will be a guard. They're looking at Russell Westbrook and DJ Augustine aswell (they're not totally keen on Eric Gordon), but expect Jerryd Bayless to likely be the guy at #5. Mayo will not fall past #5, Orlando would snap him up. Bayless is a great scorer, but does he lack the point guard abilities and length to be truly successful?
6

Sacramento

Danilo Gallinari
6' 9"; 209 lbs.
SF
This pick has been involved in many trade rumours, and is the point in the draft where things get a bit more shakey and a bit less clear. Sacramento apparently at this time are just as unclear of who they should pick also. Three guys in particular are in their sights. Brook Lopez, Eric Gordon and Danilo Gallinari. Lopez fills their need the most, Sacramento touts Gordon's star potential the most, and Gallinari is probably the best player of the bunch. Having already selected OJ Mayo, Gordon is redundant. Sac-town considers Lopez at #6 being a reach. And they claim that Danilo does the same things as Diaw. So who do they go with? Not even Sac knows. For this mock, I'm going with Gallinari. I personally think he will become the more successful one out of the players in question. Bayless will also get consideration if he slips.
7

Milwaukee

Russell Westbrook
6' 3" 187 lbs
PG/SG
I have been getting very mixed signals about the plans of Milwaukee on draft night. So expect the unexpected. They currently have picks 7 and 13. But apparently they will be drafting for Chicago at 13, and in turn Chicago will be drafting for Milwaukee at #10. So essentially Milwaukee have 7th and 10th picks, and could come away with quite a nice little rookie package on draft day. The thing about Milwaukee is that they have been working out players that are different to what i hear they're interested in. So which is the smokescreen? Which players are they TRULY interested in? Further adding to the frenzy, of the players they like, which will be drafted at 7th or 10th? Your guess is as good as mine. This will make the teams after 7 and 10 uneasy, not knowing what to expect. Well, let's look at the facts. Milwaukee have made it publically known that they are impressed with Speights over Randolph. Is Speights their man? Would they draft him at 7th or 10th? Is this a smokescreen? Would you tell the public of the prospects that you're impressed with? They are also apparently looking to get the best PG that falls into their laps, and have worked out Westbrook, Augustine, Bayless, Gordon. Will they draft their point guard at 7th or 10th? And then, I also heard word that Chicago will be drafting a "swingmen" at 10th for Milwaukee. So then that puts me into a contradictory confusion. I also heard Milwaukee is looking for Best talent available at 10th! Huh? Which of these facts are reliable? None of them? Half of them? All of them? I have no idea. The smoke is getting to my head. Shall we just predict based on logic, and what we'd do if we were in Milwaukee's shoes? I don't know, and it's making my brain go seriously ga-ga. I've got to stop thinking about it before i bust a vein in my head, and make a choice. Alright, Gordon at 7. No, Speights. WAIT..... Westbrook. And they will look to get Speights at 10. WAIT, but Chicago is drafting a swingmen for them at 10! Man, i don't know. Expect the unexpected. Milwaukee has got us in a tailspin.
8

LA Clippers

Eric Gordon
6' 3" 215 lbs
SG
It is up in air whether or not Clippers will keep their pick or not. Assuming they keep it, they'll be going best talent available. They've reportedly been working out Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, Brook Lopez, Joe Alexander and Jerryd Bayless. Two of these five have already been taken in this scenario, so it's out of Lopez, Gordon and Alexander. I don't know who they percieve as best talent available, but personally i'm yet to understand why Alexander was taken 8th in the NBA draft, so i think it will between Lopez and Gordon. I think most people generally consider Gordon the more talented prospect out of him and Lopez, so i'll go with Gordon. I've never been totally sold on Gordon, but i'm starting to think otherwise, since that he might've actually landed himself in a good situation in NBA LA Clippers with the news that Baron Davis has signed with them.
9

Seattle

Brook Lopez
7' 0"; 260 lbs
C
Reports have leaked to the public that Seattle will be trading this pick to Toronto, and recieving 23rd pick. Toronto can be expected to be go for best talent available here, except it's worth noting that they haven't been working out any SF's (excluding Joe Alexander and Gallinari). So it will be either Pg/Sg or Pf/C for them. I'll go with Brook Lopez. Lopez doesn't rebound like you'd want your starting center to, but he's a good inside scoring option. They'll probably draft Eric Gordon if Clips choose Lopez. Westbrook is also another option if he slips, and they'll think abouty Speights but ultimately decide it's a reach.
10

Chicago

Marreese Speights
6' 10" 245 lbs
PF/C
Chicago will draft for Milwaukee here. It's been said that Chicago will draft a swingmen for the Bucks, but i'll contest that the public Milwaukee interest of Speights is genuine and that they'll go with him. Speights has all the pre-requesuites to become a successful power forward. But will red flags about his poor conditioning, work ethic and immaturity effect his development? That's up to Milwaukee to decide. However, it is possible, as i talked about earlier, that other very different scenarios may occur. Milwaukee will want a point guard out of either one of their picks. Maybe they will use their 10th pick on the point guard, knowing that either Augustine or Westbrook will be there? In that case, their 7th pick might be different. Another thing to consider - Joe Alexander could be Milwaukee's guy here. Chicago have made it known that they want to kill off any rumours that they're interested in Alexander. Is Chicago getting pre-defensive about an Alexander selection? Also, there was a rumour that CHI was selecting a swingmen for MIL. Perhaps their public interest in Speights was a smokescreen for Alexander? Hmm. It's up to the GM's to ponder...
11

New Orleans

Darrell Arthur
6' 9" 215 lbs
PF
This pick is reportedly up for trade. They're either looking to split it into two later 1st rounders or trade out of the draft completely. If they keep their pick, they'll be looking at players at every position except PG. They're apparently keen on Darrell Arthur, and are strongly considering taking the risk, despite his massive slide in the NBA draft. They'll think seriously about Speights aswell, but are a bit put off by red flags (So if it IS speights that milwaukee are trading up for, then they made the right move, as Hornets could take him). They've worked out a bunch of other players aswell but so far they seem to like Arthur most.
12

Houston

Joe Alexander
6' 8" 230 lbs
SF/PF
The GM-less Rockets take whoever was drafted higher in the NBA. Augustine is another candidate for this pick if Alexander gets selected higher. Joe Alexander is a hard-nosed super-athletic forward with a great attitude and work ethic, but does he have enough to offer? Good upside.
13

Milwaukee

Roy Hibbert
7' 2" 272 lbs
C
Milwaukee will draft for Chicago here. Chicago are looking to the draft to find an eventual replacement for Shaq. That could be any big man left such as Javale McGee, Roy Hibbert, Kosta Koufos, Jason Thompson, Robin Lopez or Brook Lopez if he slips. Or even DeAndre Jordan if they're not put off by his massive slide in the NBA draft. This makes this pick hard to predict. I truly have no clue. I'll go with Hibbert.
14

Charlotte

DJ Augustine
5' 11" 175 lbs
PG
Charlotte's front office are currently working over time, and are stuck between being unsure of who to draft and testing offers for the pick. They'll likely go for the best talent available, that player is likely DJ Augustine. They're looking at Roy Hibbert and Kosta Koufos to fill their center need too, but Charlotte could probably find more use for a floor general in DJ.
15

Minnesota

Brandon Rush
6' 6" 211 lbs
SG/SF
Minnesota have 3 picks in the 1st round. 15th, 16th, and 24th, and have expressed interest in trading up to grab Joe Alexander (i see a potential trade partner in New Orleans). If they stand pat, they'll be looking to draft 2 players that fill holes in their bench rotation and a project player. PG is one of their needs, and they would've liked DJ to fall one more stop, but most likely won't happen. The next best point guard is Mario Chalmers, and they can probably get him at 24th. So in this mock, that can be Minny's plan. With 15 and 16, they can get both their project player and their bench contributor, and get their point guard at 24 (assuming Chalmers is still available). For their bench contributor, i have them going with Brandon Rush at 15. For their project player, i have them going for Anthony Randolph at 16.

16

Minnesota

Anthony Randolph
6' 11" 220 lbs
SF/PF
This is Minnesota's 2nd out of three 1st round picks. With this pick they could get their project player in Anthony Randolph. They'll think about DeAndre Jordan, but ultimately decide that this is too high for him. If they feel threatened that Chalmers might not be available at 24, then maybe they'll select Chalmers here instead, and look to the 24th pick to get their project player in Jordan?
17

Boston

JaVale McGee
7' 0" 237 lbs
C
Boston are looking to get a center, and have expressed interest in JaVale McGee.
18

Portland

JJ Hickson
6' 9" 242 lbs
PF
The Portland Trailblazers will look to strengthen their depth for next season's defending campaign. They don't have any specific glaring needs, apart from maybe a backup point guard, but they might decide 18 is a reach for Chalmers. So they'll likely opt for who they percieve as best talent available. I don't know for sure who that will be, but it will most likely be a guy that can come in a contribute sooner rather than later. They think about Jason Thompson, but decide he's a few years off. Robin Lopez comes into mind, but there's better talent left at this stage. Kosta Kofous would be a good pick too, but he'll need a few years too. I have them going for Hickson. A solid PF who will likely have a lengthy career as a solid starter or excellent reserve post player.
19

LA Lakers

Kosta Koufos
7' 0" 250 lbs
C
I think Lakers will probably go for best talent available here, since their team doesn't really have any specific players that need to be built around, and will likely fill holes via FA. They have some good talent in the post already, but Kosta Koufos may be their man anyway. Koufos is a highly skilled big. The next Okur?
20

New York

Omer Asik
7' 0" 220 lbs
PF/C
New York have made it publically known that Roy Hibbert is their man, and if he is gone they are likely trading down. Now we ask ourselves - is this a smokescreen? I think it's probably genuine. Though hoping for Hibbert at 20 is a bit dreamy, but i guess it could happen. I've heard a rumour from a private source that Omer Asik is their guy at #20. Will NY trade down for him instead? Is this a bullshit rumour? For the sake of shaking up this mock, let's take it on board to be true. Don't be surprised if it's not though. And don't be surprised if someone else owns this pick by draft night.
21

Miami

Jason Thompson
6' 10" 245 lbs
PF/C
Miami has targetted Darrell Arthur as their guy, and at 21 that's not such a dream. But they didn't foresee New Orleans reaching for him at #11. If Hornets pass him up, Miami just may get him. (unless Hornets trade down for a mid-teen pick, they'd probably take him there). Miami is also rumoured to be keen on Brandon Rush. None of those two are available, and they get a guy who was drafted 12th in the NBA draft instead.
22

San Antonio

Courtney Lee
6' 5" 200 lbs
SG/SF
Spurs are apparently interested in Roy Hibbert (So they can move Tim Duncan back to PF), and are trying hard to trade up into a better position to get him. Failing that, they're going to look for backcourt help. Who will that be? Not sure. They'll think about Nicolas Batum, Donte Greene, Marion Chalmers, JR Giddens and even George Hill, but might decide Courtney Lee can contribute the most immediate help to a contender from the backcourt. If they decide they could use a different center other than Hibbert, then they might hope Koufos, McGee, Thompson falls to them. They might even think about DeAndre Jordan.
23

Toronto

Robin Lopez
7' 0" 255 lbs
C/PF
Seattle will be picking here, after trading their 9th pick to Toronto. Could this pick be involved in the blockbuster between Wizards and Sonics? Don't know. I don't know who Seattle will take here, i'll go with Robin Lopez. Robin is the more athletic one of the 2 brothers, but less offensively able.
24

Minnesota

Mario Chalmers
6' 2" 181 lbs
PG
Minny get their PG, who slid in the NBA draft to the 2nd round, but shouldn't affect his stock in NLL too much.
25

Toronto

Nicolas Batum
6' 8" 210 lbs
SG/SF
Toronto will be selecting best talent available here. Who they percieve as best talent available i'm not totally sure on. But among the players they're looking at are George Hill, Nicolas Batum, Donte Greene and Serge Ibaka. I'll go with Batum. Chalmers will get consideration too if Minny doesn't take him, along with Courtney Lee.
26

Philadelphia

DeAndre Jordan
6' 11" 255 lbs
C
Philly has remained silent on his draft plans, so i have them picking here is based on just my logic. Philly are going to want to add get some immediate help from their pick to strengthen their playoff campaign next season, so that eliminates Alexis Ajinca and Serge Ibaka. On the other hand, Philly in the past have generally gone for best talent available, despite position. A trend i've noticed with them is that they tend to go for players that are either athletically elite or proven college stars. And for that reason i think DeAndre Jordan might be their man. He is an incredible physical specimen. Also, it's worth noting that Philly have great talent scattered throughout their roster at most positions, bar center. Other players that might get consideration are Donte Greene, JG Giddens, Ryan Anderson, George Hill, and DJ White.
27

Washington

Donte Greene
6' 9"; 221 lbs.
SF/PF
Washington apparently aren't intersted in a player that might get stashed overseas such as Alexis Ajinca or Serge Ibaka. They are also going to go for best talent available. Could this pick be involved in the Seattle blockbuster? Don't think so. But worth considering. There are quite a few options here. But i think they will go with Donte Greene. It's quite possible that Greene could go higher though.
28

Dallas

Chris Douglas-Roberts
6' 7" 200 lbs
SG/SF
Dallas have expressed a desire to trade up into the top 10 to grab a guard bench spark. If they stand pat, they're looking at Chalmers, CDR, Lee and Batum. CDR is the guy left out of that group.
29

Memphis

JR Giddens
6' 5" 208 lbs
SG/SF
Memphis are talking to everyone in the league about acquiring another 1st round pick. At this pick they're looking at DeAndre Jordan, but he was taken earlier, therefore i'm not sure who they'll go with. Are they looking to draft a center, or are they looking for bes talent available? Probably best talent available. Ryan Andrson might get a look, but i think JR Giddens would get it.
30

New Jersey

Ryan Anderson
6' 11" 230 lbs
PF/C
New Jersey have always been a fan of their tall shooters, and a very talented one has fallen into their laps. Look for them to draft a player that will best exploit the game of NBA Live. Ryan Anderson - the next coming of Keith Van Horn?

On the bubble: Alexis Ajinca, Serge Ibaka, George Hill, DJ White, Nikola Pekovic, Joey Dorsey.
