Team by Team: New York Knicks
2006-2007 Finish: 29-53

What went well

Not too much went well for GM Dunadan in the Season The Knicks Want to Forget. But underneath all the horrible New York Daily News headlines there were some bright spots for New York this season.

The Knicks began the season following the In With the New, Out With the Old maxim to which Isaiah Thomas and GM Dunadan have recently subscribed. Sent away were veterans Chris Duhon, town favorite Dikembe Mutombo and free agent signees Fred Jones and Keyon Dooling. In their stead the Knicks received rookie Rudy Gay, youngster Nate Robinson, draft picks and cap space.

The Knicks went 6-7 in the first three weeks. Then tragedy struck. Confronted with too many bodies and not enough slots, the Knicks released GM Dunadan favorite Darius Miles. Miles, who sat out a lot of last season, needed microfracture surgery. Thomas must have been running the show here as a sad day in Knickdom passed with Miles' release.

There is a glimmer of hope for next season. Andris Biedrins and David Lee continue to improve. Gay and Paul Millsap both had promising rookie years. The Knicks are in a transition phase and GM Dunadan has the basketball acumen to fix things and do it quick.

What didn't

Injuries and inexperience doomed the Knicks. Even GM Dunadan they were playing for draft position at the end. Besides Miles, projected starter Robert Swift never suited up. Lee only played in 52 games. There were no established veterans to help guide the young Knicks. At the end of the day, this team was just not good enough to compete against the others in the East.

Star

- Kyle Korver, GF-

Perhaps the Knicks' true weapon comes off the bench. At one time thought to be purely a one-dimensional player, Korver took his three point shot and developed it into a mid-range game. It seems the Knicks are grooming him to start next season. Who would blame them? This guy averaged 10.9 points coming off the bench. He hit 46% of his three-pointers. He should have been nominated for the Sixth Man Award.

Goat

- Stromile Swift, PF –

What happened to this guy? Once a cornerstone of the franchise, Swift is now its highest paid and one of its least seen. After starting in almost every game he played as a Knick the past three years, Swift showed up in only 51 games this season, starting only 21. He only took a third of his usual field goal attempts and averaged a paltry 6.4 points. He is still only 27 but his upside is waning. He didn't play horribly, but for being the top paid guy on a team, such mediocre numbers is not an excuse.

Looking to the future

The Knicks took a giant leap towards the future with the draft day acquisition of point guard phenom Deron Williams for a couple of picks. This could be considered the steal of the day. In just two seasons Williams has become a tremendous player in the league. He could just become the next John Stockton or Steve Nash.

After acquiring so many picks during the season, the Knicks walked away from the draft with only Glen Davis this season. The big man from LSU is an intriguing player. He is a little short for his position and needs to work on his conditioning to compete, but he's strong and wide and has some skills.

The Knicks' biggest concern for next season is roster space. They already have 16 slots taken with signed players and unsigned free agents. Travis Outlaw and Justin Williams have already indicated they want to come back, but will there be room? Yaroslav Korolev will be let go. It would not surprise the Insider if the Knicks pull off a multi-player deal before the season begins where they packagea lot of good players together for one great player. There already have been rumors of a Michael Redd deal, but both sides have said that it is nothing more than that.
