NLL Insider - FA Day 1- The Big Stories

by vt, updated on Sunday, October 22 2017, 12:55 am EST

Although most of the fireworks will happen during FA Day 2, there were some exciting storylines at play during FA Day 1. First, most of the league turned out to find out if big names such as Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry jumped ship (they didn’t) and who would get the most GM points dumped on them. In reality, many of the teams in the NLL are now hamstrung financially with big contracts and new cap hold rules, making it difficult for teams to splash out on big money guys. Actually, there were only seven players to hit the FA market. Here are their stories, plus one interesting sign and trade deal that went down.

JJ Redick- Isn’t there a rule in Australia about not driving and texting? Isn’t there a rule about doing anything other than being caught in rapt attention in front of your computer during FA Day? If the rumors are true, sharpshooting Redick should be wearing a Hornets jersey, but instead he rebuffed his former team for the rebuilding miasma of the Miami Heat, which may be currently one of the worst teams ever in NLL history, no fault of current GM Breece.

So while GM Digga was out racing his hot rod and thinking of ways how not to tank this season, Redick’s agent took meetings with the Heat and the Wizards. It was a tough call supposedly, but Redick decided on the rebuilding squad, signing up at South Beach for a cool $23 million and unlimited shots per night.

George Hill- Some folks expressed surprise when the Lakers let Hill take a walk. I bet they were looking at his feet, specifically his big toe, see if he was limping on his way out the door. Hill, probably overpaid, decided instead to join the lowly New Orleans Pelicans, hearing that the team loves to pay a lot for guys who only turn in a few games each season. The move didn’t exactly make sense for the Pelicans as they are already slated to pay Reggie Jackson $16 million next season. Add Hill’s $20 million and Chandler Parsons’ $23 million and that’s a lot of IR dough. Plus, the Pelicans have Hill slated as their starting shooting guard. Hmmmm. Hill narrowly chose the Pelicans over the Heat. Probably because in Miami he would be expected to play.

Bismack Biyombo- Somebody had to pay Biyombo his inflated salary. In stepped the Heat, who netted a second high price guy with little competition. Biyombo instantly becomes the team’s best big and helps the Heat become better, which says very little for the Professor’s stellar team management skills.

Taj Gibson- With many of the big name FAs’ arrivals a foregone conclusion, Gibson was probably the vanguard of the guys available. The Grizzlies must have really wanted him. So much that they spent 70 GM points to wrest Gibson away from the Hornets and the Suns. Though it’s unclear where Gibson will fit in the Grizzlies’ depth chart, this was a really good pick-up. It is insane to say, but these days $14 million is a good contract of a guy of his talent. But here’s the rub, Gibson was planning to join the Grizzlies whether the team spent the 70 GM points or not.

JR Smith- We were all pretty shocked when the Mavericks renounced JR Smith. What was even more shocking was that the Blazers were the only team who decided to bid on him. This is a good pick up by this rebuilding squad, especially if Rudy Gay returns. We keep shitty GMs around these parts way too long. Imagine if Toby had gotten ahold of the Blazers before DjDrew totally wrecked this time? Things are looking up in Rip City.

Jeremy Lin- It looked like a bidding war was brewing for point guard Jeremy Lin. However, the point guard ruptured his patella tendon this week and after surgery will miss the entire season. Yikes! That didn’t stop teams from bidding on him. The Heat, knowing an injured Lin would improve the mess the Professor left his successor, took a swing. Ultimately, Lin opted to sign with the Washington Wizards. Though he won’t suit up this season, Lin does hold a player option and maybe he will stick in DC.

Amir Johnson- The Wizards also scooped up Johnson, who the Grizzlies also courted. It was a big day for a GM with some of the worst luck in the league. Of course, half his haul won’t play for the season, but hopefully Johnson can help Darko out a bit. He is a decent player that could fill in at both the four and the five.

Paul Millsap- The New York Knicks drafted Millsap 40th way back in 2006. Until today, he has never played for another team. Having a player for 11 years is a rarity in this league. It must have been an emotional day for Tim and the Knicks today when he engaged in a sign and trade with the Dallas Mavericks for one of his favorite players. Yes, Millsap’s $30 million is an obscene amount of money. But the GM points and first rounder Tim got back for an elite power forward doesn’t seem like much. Especially since the first is a Philly first. I guess cap space counts for something. Knicks fans are weeping, Tim.

RFAs- Lots of restricted free agents opted to test the market, including Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Tony Snell (whose GM didn’t even bother to show up), Kelly Olynyk, Otto Porter and Bojan Bogdanovich. No one even bothered to drop GM points on any of these guys. Last year, the Knicks got blindsided when the Tyler Johnson got snagged by the Blazers, but nothing of the sort happened on FA Day 1. Maybe next time.
