Sixers Advance
08-19-2021
CHARLOTTE-
The Philadelphia 76ers have advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals after routing
the Charlotte Hornets 124-98 in a Game 6 victory. After losing two straight
games to the Hornets, Sixers coach Doc Rivers posted a different lineup, one
that pushed the team over the edge.
The biggest
change was the benching of Rudy Gay, who struggled after averaging 12.5 points
per game on 50% shooting against the Detroit Pistons in the first round. Gay
did not match up well against the Hornets, hitting 11 points per game but
shooting a woeful 36%. Rivers decided to bench the veteran today and slide
James Harden to small forward, allowing Derrick Rose to remain in the starting
lineup.
Rose was
lights-out in the series, averaging 25.5 points per game while hitting 64% from
the field and 60% from beyond the arc. Both Gay and Rose are expiring and the
playoffs may very well determine how hard the Sixers try to bring them both
back.
Harden, who
missed three games due to a hamstring issue, scored a game-high 43 points. The
team needed the win after being drubbed 148-119 in front of a home crowd in
Game five.
“We adjusted,”
Rivers said. “We tried a new game plan. We played more conservative defense. The
refs blew us out of the water the last few games.”
After this
tough series, the Sixers will have to face Giannis Antetokounmpo and the defending
champions Milwaukee Bucks.
“All the best
to the Hornets and to GM Digga,” GM VT said. “Charlotte played a tough series.
We really had to look at game tape and adjust to deal with Zinger and Embiid. That
is one tough team!”
Now only
four teams remain. The Sixers will have their work cut out for them next round.
The Bucks ended the Sixers’ season early last year. Will history repeat itself?
