Rolling Thunder: 28/11/2017

Nikola Mirotic was a late returnee for the Thunder in the offseason, and considered a key cog for the Thunder bench, likely to line up as the teams reserve SF and bomb threes ‘til the cows came home. But, he missed the start of the season, the Thunder big man department worked better than expected with John Henson at the 4 and the Thunder decided that they needed a proper SF to play the role. Not to mention, they needed a salary cut.

Fast forward to week 4 when the Free Agent signee moratorium is lifted and Mirotic is on the move without having suited up for the Thunder this season. He suffered facial fractures in an incident involving a fist, and has been working to come back ever since. In this time, GM Nenjabin was able to monitor the teams progress without their perceived bench gunner, and decided that $12.5 million was too much to pay for a guy who seemed to have less and less of a role as the weeks went by. Sitting at 9-3 to end week 3, who can blame him?

What do the Thunder need? A reliable bench wing. They already have borderline starter Dennis Schroder at the 1, Josh Richardson ever growing at the 2, safe as houses big man John Henson at the 4 and the enigmatic JaVale McGee at the 5, but the 3 spot was being filled rather unceremoniously by the likes of Patrick McCaw, Nik Stauskas and Juan Hernangomez. At least two of which aren’t ready.

Enter, Kyle Korver. He may be the oldest player the Thunder will ever own…but he’s an elite shooter, he’s fairly healthy and he can fill a role well in a stacked team. He’ll space the floor, can score in bunches and brings veteran leadership to the young Thunder at a reasonable cost. He also happens to be Nenjabin’s favourite player.

Welcome to Oklahoma, Kyle Korver!
