Thunder Pair return...injured

FA Day 1 is done and the Thunder were uneventfully successful. They came in with 2 guys to be decided, Dennis Schroder and Nikola Mirotic, but both were Restricted Free Agents and both extremely happy to be playing in Oklahoma so it was a mere formality that they’d decide to return, and return they did. The Thunder made sure it was a 100% certainty to claim back their Qualifying Offer cash.

So, successful, but uneventful, as was expected. And they never had the cash to go fishing.

It isn’t all smiles and rainbows though for these 2 guys. Nikola Mirotic had an unfortunate incident in which he attacked the hand of some summer league scrub with his face. He escaped team sanctions for the brutal attack, but his face unfortunately came off 2^nd best and he’s set to miss the start of the season and possibly 2-4 weeks of the NLL season.

“It was silly of me”, said Mirotic. “I’ve let my teammates, coaches and fans down. I’ll be back as soon as possible.”

As for Dennis, shortly after agreeing to terms on his new deal, he walked out of the office, down the stairs and out onto the street when BAM, the curb jumped up out of nowhere and lunged straight for his foot, rolling his ankle over. Wouldn’t you know it, right before the season starts, just as he signed his deal, he goes down injured and could miss the start of the season.

These are setbacks, but they’re only blips on the radar realistically. Mirotic signed for $12.5 million guaranteed with a 2^nd year Team Option of the same value, and showed he can be a dynamic scorer off the bench requiring very little time to get up a tonne of shots, makes and points. Dennis signed a 4 year deal worth $15.5 million a year for the life of the deal. The non-incremental rise should help the Thunder try and keep the family together over the coming seasons while they float around lux territory before going deep into it in the next year or 2.
