New old Knixers

The second free-agent frenzy turned out to be a really quiet in New York. The Spurs beat them to the first player to have his name called in Justin  Holiday. Leeroy is now 3-0 against us.

Afterwards the Knicks placed tentative bids here and there, but tip-toeing around the luxury cap and eyeing the hard cap, dunadan never placed any points, keeping them for the eventual bid on Mba a Moute.

Nene came back into the fold and when Luc's name was called, the veteran, against the odds, decided to return to New York without even testing the market.

But the Knicks were still stingy with their points and ultimately Jason Terry fell into their laps. The 18-year veteran will mostly serve as insurance policy against injuries in the back-court.

Dunadan had promised to fill out the roster with shooters and the Jet can still shoot it, even at 40 years old.

With a single slot  and the full MLE left,New York was poised to make a run at Milos Teodosic. But the clock was winding down and the team had a boat-load of guards classified as better than Milos.

So they continued bidding without points and suddenly found themselves inking a former #1 NLL draft pick, who only the Suns showed interest in as well.

Ben McLemore had been riding the pine in Philadelphia for four years, accumulating only 162 games played, not even two full seasons. But the Sixers roster was always loaded and Ben never got a chance.

Now he will most likely be riding the pine in New York. With Fans are hoping to see the occasional Shaq-Lemore highlight in garbage time and with the front office hoping that NBA McLemore will somehow turn into a servicable starter in Memphis.Despite his status as a draft bust, McLemore sports solid shooting ratings and shot 44% from deep last season for the Sixers.

The next day, the Knicks completed the pre-arranged trade of injured Rodney McGruder for Manu Ginobili, giving them a second 40-year old and officially making them the oldest team in the league.

To make room for Manu they had to cut another Argentinian Nic Brussino, who quickly got snatched up by the Bulls.

Manu is only one season removed from averaging 15ppg in only 21 minutes for the Lakers. No one expects these kind of numbers for the, by now, totally bald guard any more, But if he can duplicate last year's shooting percentages, the coaching staff will be very happy.

He could also temporarily take over ball handling duties in a pinch.

With now one opening and two surprise free-agent appearances, the Knicks luckily decided stay away from Willis, ehm Willie Reed and instead went after Josh Smith. Like Mc and Manu, another former 76er.

Smith's NBA situation is precarious and he is years from being the top-level contributor he was for almost a decade in Philly. But he still is an atheltic big body, who can defend multiple positions and isn't shy to let it fly from range.
Is he a good shooter? Hell no. But he most definitly likes to shoot and will create some matchup problems for 90% of this league's backup big men.

So after the loss of Millsap and Mills, the Knicks are no longer as top heavy as they used to be. But they have regrouped and bolstered their bench with what they consider 2k-ready players.

The offseason has also made them much deeper than they were at this point last year, when they sported the the rookie trio of Ron Baker, Mo N'Dour, Brussino.

And finally, the salary situation isn't as dire as it looked this summer either. The two veteran minimum contracts of Terry and Smith did put them over the lux-tax. But they are only for one year and could easily be bought out if they don't deliver.

Mbah A Moute will again be a free-agent next summer, but will have early bird rights by then. Kyle Anderson will be a restriced FA. Everyone else is locked in for at least another season, when Howard's and Randolph's huge contracts expire.

This gives the Knicks a new two-year window to operate with this team, hopefully on a high level.

Here's a picture of the good old days, where at least Manu still had hair.
