FA Day One Won and Done
NLL Fans, rejoice! We are just a short amount of
days away from the kickoff of the 2017-18 NLL season. Celtics fans, another
season of championship chasing will commence and I know everyone is looking
forward to washing the injuries and disappointing finish to last season from
their memories.
FA Day One is a very important day on the NLL calendar for every team. This is
where the big money players, and often the best players in the league, choose
their fate and the fate of their team. Lots of money is splashed around and
teams can rise and fall very quickly during this high-stakes period of
jostling.

From the Celtics point of view, they had a lot to lose and a lot to gain if the
chips fell their way. Kevin Durant, perennial MVP candidate, was an
unrestricted free agent. Kyle Lowry, an All-Star point guard, was an
unrestricted free agent. Andre Iguodala, former All-Star and premier defender,
was an unrestricted free agent. The Celtics could have been devastated.
However, it turned out to be a very pleasant day, due to the loyalty of these
players and the culture and roster that the Boston organisation has been able
to create these past years.
Tick. Tick. Tick. Three for three.
All three re-signed, with varying contract size and length, and the Celtics’
pursuit of a title is still a go. Kevin Durant has signed a 25 million dollar
‘1 and 1’ deal, keeping his future options open. Kyle Lowry has signed a three
year deal worth about 90 million dollars in total. Andre Iguodala has signed a
three year, 45 million dollar deal. These three players make up 60% of the
starting unit. Happy times for Boston Celtics fans.
‘We were confident we would get them to stay’, said coach Stevens.

‘They are all professionals and all value winning and professionalism. We
provide them with a chance to win a lot of basketball games and be in an
environment with a rich, storied history of success, spanning back to the
Auerbach and Russell days. We just hope that this can be the season we make
another stride, step towards success.’
These deals leave Boston with little wiggle room financially. With current cap
holds included, the team salary is over 125 million dollars, well over the
luxury cap and hovering around the hard cap. Due to these constraints, Shelvin
Mack was renounced.
With FA Day Two approaching, Tyreke Evans and Dewayne Dedmon are still
unsigned. The Celtics still have almost half a roster to fill, armed with no
cap space and just the taxpayer’s exception and the bi-annual exception.
