Another Day Another Trade

For a team that entered the offseason happy with their roster, there certainly has been a lot of churn in Brooklyn lately. Late last week, the fourth deal of the young offseason was already reached. Other than the brief and unsuccessful Ty Lawson experiment, this one is easily the least significant. However, it was probably the most discussed and at times even stressful.

By the end of the week, the Nets ended up executing a 3-way deal with the Boston Celtics and Portland Trailblazers. Portland was looking for future prospects and Boston was looking to shore up a thin bench. The Nets, as has been a theme for the offseason - needed an additional point guard and to clear salary. When it came down to it, the Nets sent out the newly arriving rookie - Guerschon Yabusele as well as backup center Kyle O'Quinn and Justin Anderson.

The Nets are sad to see Yabusele go before they even got him on the court. They really liked his combination of skills and potential and it is possible or even likely that he'll end up the best player in this deal long term. O'Quinn may also be the best right now.

What they got back is a versatile power forward that should play a glue guy role off of the bench, and may even find his way into the starting lineup for the early portion of the season. Larry Nance Jr. is young and most importantly on a stellar rookie contract that will keep his cost low for the next couple of years - a key factor for the Nets. They also got another decent backup point guard in Shabazz Napier and a third string center in A.J. Hammons. To add to that, they secured 3 additional second round picks (one in each of the next 3 drafts) as well as cash considerations.

The positional fit of this deal is great, in that the team really needed a true power forward, another point guard and a cheap option at center. It also will save them over $3 million in salaries for the following year. Including the yet to be executed Kevin Love trade - this pulls the Nets under the luxury cap before signing Mason Plumlee. With the market for Mason's services seeming surprisingly tepid, it is possible that he takes a discount to stay with the Nets and they end up not too far over the luxury cap - at one point a seemingly impossible move. After trading for restricted free agents Shabazz Muhammad, Tony Snell, and Mason Plumlee at the deadline and looking at last year's spending on free agents - it looked like the team could end up as much as $50 million over the luxury cap... so the possibility of being even just a manageable amount over is exciting.

As it stands, the healthy lineup of the team is looking something like this:
