No Love

Today marks another big day in the storied few years of the Brooklyn Nets - well maybe the big day was when the Timberwolves leaked the deal or the day that it actually becomes official - but this news article makes it a big day... right? This isn't one that will swing the balance of power in either conference, or really even alter the trajectory of the team. In what seems like an annual tradition, the team has significantly altered their core in a deal agreed upon during the summer months.

The team had put feelers out on several players to see what they could do to alleviate some of the pressure related to their salary situation. They mainly came up dead on several offers of borderline starters and the like in exchange for all-star level players. However, dealing with a unique sign-and-trade situation of their own - the Minnesota Timberwolves became an obvious trade partner. The deal came quite simply to the two long-time friends, but took a while to agree upon as each was mulling over several different possibilities with other teams. In the end, a deal that felt obvious to both teams easily floated to the top:

Kevin Love

for

Danilo Gallinari, Jabari Parker, and the return of Brooklyn's 2019 1st round pick

Danilo is a player that the Nets appreciated when nobody else did and their front office was glad to see become available yet again, despite the tension of his situation in Minnesota. Combined with another possibility that nobody saw coming - the injured scorer Jabari Parker, the Wolves had just enough to peak the Nets' interest.

The deal was one both teams were initially receptive to in principle, but what really moved the deal along was the combination of $4 million in cap savings for the Nets (most likely translating to the ability to keep the rest of their roster in tact with less heartache) and the ability for E'Twaun Moore to run the backup point guard spot for the Wolves.

Looking forward, this isn't a tough one to figure out for the Nets - they get their 2019 pick back from the potentially ill-advised Mason Plumlee trade with Minnesota, while also bringing in a 22 year old stud in Jabari Parker and getting back Gallinari. Love's potential free agency also lined up with that of Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe - making that a particularly troublesome horizon. In this deal, Minnesota gets a big time addition to their "Big 3" of DeMarcus Cousins and CJ McCollum, while Brooklyn gets another couple of more flexible pieces to put around their existing lineup of Middleton, Jordan, Bledsoe and DeRozan.

The Nets' angle on this seems to be that they can rely on their existing players enough to sustain their success while continuing to accumulate younger and future assets. There were also questions about who would run the bench unit, and getting two big-time scoring forwards should make it so they can still play a scoring four with the starters, while also having a dominant forward on the bench. We will have to see if it proves correct in the coming seasons. The biggest skepticism is that yet again, the Nets will head into a year with high expectations while missing one of their best players for more than half of the season.

As usual... rumor has it there is more coming!
