Raptors unlikely to make major move
The new general manager in Toronto has had several
preliminary trade discussions with other executives around the league in the
first few days of his tenure. However, according to multiple sources within the
organization, it seems that the odds of a major blockbuster have become less
and less likely. An insider report earlier this week suggested the team is
hoping to move point guard Luca Vildoza for a future second round pick or cash,
but otherwise the rumor mill has been quiet.
The Raptors do expect to have plenty of cap space this
offseason to be significant players in free agency, but conversations with
sources suggest without a first-round pick in next year’s draft, the front
office is inquiring with teams looking to clear cap space about acquiring a
significant contract alongside a future pick or young player. Still, with
impending free agent guards Dennis Schroder and Lou Williams both set to have
cap holds worth more than $15 million, some voices internally are against
limiting the team’s flexibility before hitting the open market.
Most teams have inquired about the availability of both
Bradley Beal and the third overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft, but without
any overwhelming offers the front office has shifted their approaching to
building a contender around Beal and whichever top prospect they select with
the third overall pick. While a pair of the top prospects will obviously be off
the board before Toronto is on the clock, they are confident that a potential foundational
piece will be available.
While no final decisions have been made, sources inside the
building said that Evan Mobley’s workout was particularly impressive and the
possibility of pairing the athletic big man with Beal could be a tantalizing
combination. Of course, those within the organization remained non-committal
and noted that other top prospects like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Green, Scottie
Barnes, Jalen Suggs, Jonathan Kuminga, and Josh Giddey are all under
consideration.
