How About Now?

Heading into last week, we claimed that it was a now or never week for the Nets - they were all of the way back in 11th place in the East and playing all four of the teams directly above them in week 12.

After a hot/lucky start to the week, the team held out hope that they could actually run the table, putting them solidly in 8th place and with and assumed position of having "figured it out". Like the NLL usually does - they got enough optimism to keep them going, but also a dose of humility in a close loss to the recently rebuilt Miami Heat.

Despite the loss to Miami, there is reason to believe that Brooklyn really could emerge from the 5-team cluster fighting for the 8th seed in the East. Not only is it possible that one of the teams clustered in spots 3-7 fall, but watching the team play for the last week and a half - it looks like they're actually clicking and look like the talented basketball team they should be. If you leave the poor coaching and lineup choices in the past, it's entirely possible that they end up in the many teams barking at the heels of the Bucks and Cavs. But the standings suggest that a one-week misstep or unfortunate key injury could very quickly send them from 8th to 12th!

The team has been surprisingly reliant upon DeAndre and DeMar. But Bledsoe and Middleton seem to be finding their spots, and Nance is continuing to be a great 5th as the final starter. The bench efficiency has also picked up in recent weeks... Taj is proving to be a stabilizing force and De'Aaron and Shabazz are figuring out how to make it work the backcourt.

The Nets are certainly missing Mason Plumlee and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson of late, but they're expected to be back in the coming weeks with no huge implications to the remainder of the season. The coaching staff is insistent that this is why they've worked so hard with fringe pieces like Anthony Brown and Omer Asik - for the few weeks of the playoff chase where their roles are relevant to the standings.

It's not necessarily "all good" in Nets land right now, but there is reason to believe that Brooklyn will be back in the postseason, and that is reason enough to be happy!
