What's the difference?...

What’s the difference?…

The question blowing up social media after the recent trade to send Pau Gasol to Denver in a three way deal seeing Brook Lopez, who has bounced around the league from Boston to Philadelphia eventually landing in Sacramento. Lopez comes in with averages of 19.4 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 2 APG, 1.9 SPG, 1.5 BPG shooting 86% from the line and 53% from the field. Which is almost identical to the type of numbers Pau was putting up minus the elite defence.

Of course other pieces were involved which surely influenced the hand of the Kings front office as fan favourite and savvy veteran Courtney Lee also packed his bags alongside Pau, as the two make their way to their new home at altitude. The Kings interest also lay with acquiring young up and coming wing in Will Barton who has had his struggles in Philly only shooting 38% from the field and 30% from three. The Kings get younger sure but both are expiring contracts and the real issue being raised is how this team looks going into next year which seems to be a trend since GM Klemmelo has taken over.

“Wtf! Pau was sooo much better for us! Lopez has been traded twice already for a reason, the dude just doesn’t give a S***! He’s soft as butter!” - StillMadAboutKlay69

“I just don’t get any of these Moves… Does this make the Kings better??? Barton has been average all year and they both will most likely leave in the offseason. Not a smart move at all I think a new front office is in order.” - Me7o4Prez

“We just beat the Wolves away and Pau went off! This is the thanks he gets?! The guy has put everything into this team! No patience for this team anymore, no loyalty at all…” - KDTheSnakes10000thAcc

GM Klemmelo gave a short and sweet media interview today addressing concerns and commenting on the direction of the Kings franchise going forward.

“It’s as simple as this… We as a head officer including myself have always made moves and decisions based on what’s best for the franchise as a whole. Our goal is to win a championship. That’s it. Some may call it lack of direction and some may call me trigger happy but I’m not going to waste resources and time on something or someone I know isn’t going to work or fit towards our long term goals which is again, winning a championship.

That being said it’s not a reflection of the calibre or character of the guys we just saw leave in Pau and Lee, I had great relationship with both and both realise this is a business and are excited and look forward to the next chapter in their career. No one’s feeling are hurt around here and frankly I couldn’t care less. The way we’re currently constructed I believe we have the best chance to give it a real shot and with the overall talent displayed in the league it’s indeed an arms race and we have to compete.

We’re supremely confident in our winning culture and system and have no issues taking on players who are looking for contract extensions in the offseason because we plan to keep them. It’s a calculated risk and if you’re not taking risks in this league you may as well pack your bags and go home.”
