Sixers Notes

11-03-2017

PHILADELPHIA- The Sixers signed three free agents during last weekend’s signing bloodbath, but it’s unclear just how any of them will fit the team’s plan.

Although the team swung and whiffed on popular names such as Michael Beasley, Ian Clark and Tony Allen, the Sixers did bring on big man Mike Muscala. Muscala, also pursued by the Raptors, Wizards, Knicks and Celtics was surprisingly not offered a chance to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“I was considering going back,” Muscala said, who averaged 5.9 points per game and 3.7 rebounds per game for the Cavs in 13.9 minutes per game. “They didn’t even offer me a contract.”

Though the Sixers were also talking with the agent of Dewayne Dedmon (who ultimately chose the Chicago Bulls), GM VT claims that they were looking for a player like Muscala.

“Mike is an athletic big who can shoot and spread the floor,” GM VT said. “He was the type of player we were looking for.”

Initially slated to back up Gorgui Dieng, a recent trade (news story coming soon) puts Muscala’s position with the team in a hazy situation. He may not even crack the rotation in the first week. However, the four-year veteran isn’t concerned.

“I’ll get my time,” Muscala said. “I’ll find a way onto the floor.”

The team also picked up veteran small forward Richard Jefferson who joined the Sixers after a stint on the dreadful Miami Heat. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Chicago Bulls also pursued RJ, but he decided to sign with Philly.

The 37-year-old journeyman is the oldest Sixer by a longshot, followed by 30-year-old Darren Collison. Though he was brought on mainly to mentor the younger Sixers, RJ will suit up to support Kelly Oubre while Kawhi Leonard convalesces from his leg injuries.

In a final pickup, the Sixers grabbed swingman Julyan Stone, who hasn’t appeared in an NLL game since 2014. Stone, who will miss the next 4-6 weeks with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, will likely never crack the Sixers’ rotation and serves a good candidate for a buy out if the Sixers manage to bring on a better player.
