The Thunder have had a quiet offseason so far with only some solid developmental signs of last years rookies, a decent looking few draft selections in the latest draft and 2 of their 3 expiring players already signalling they wish to return, but what of the last piece, Nikola Mirotic?

It’s been all quiet on the Mirotic front throughout the whole summer. He’s an RFA with blistering scoring ability when his shot it falling and he’s said to be working on his body mostly to be better equipped to bang down low on D, but that is about all we have heard. Some negotiating on whether he’ll return or not, no signs of him talking to any other teams, and yet no signs of him committing to return to Oklahoma like JaVale McGee and Dennis Schroder have. So where is he?

Well, he’s not at Eurobasket either…he’s literally gone AWOL.

What if the Thunder can’t agree to terms? Could this be a chink in the depth chart that arguably reads 12 deep? Reports earlier in the summer were that the Thunder were strongly considering using Mirotic as the primary wing off the bench as they weren’t sure that Patrick McCaw or Juan Hernangomez were quite ready for a prominent role right off the bat. Schroder/JRich/Mirotic/Henson/McGee looks like a fair handful for a team to contend with. But, if no Nikola, do they swap JRich down and give Kennard a run? Or is it a simple swap in of McCaw/Hernangomez? Both line-ups definitely look a lot less potent when compared to one giving Mirotic 3 shots every 2mins!

Options are nice. Kids are nice. But this is a team that could be on the cusp of going all the way if they mesh like most think they can, and relying on kids probably isn’t the way to go for a title run. Look for the Thunder to make a strong play using a package of assets to fill a wing need.
