How Seasons Magically End

For all intents and purposes, as has been stated ad nauseum, the Orlando Magic season is virtually over.  With all the pre-season expectations they team garnered around the league, the culmination of injuries and lack of genuine chemistry due to the injuries were the main culprits.

L J Maverick took over the reigns of the team in the off-season with high expectations but none that were other-worldly.  He wasn't thinking championships and parades.  No.  But, he was imagining the taste of the playoffs in quite some time.  The beginning of his tenure brought some deals that were promised by the outgoing regime.  The trades left very little to be desired for the future of the team as they had virtually no future assets to build on.  L J Maverick quickly restored that.  The irony lies that with further dealings, the team ultimately was left with no future assets but with some may say a much improved team.  We guess that opinion lies with whom you ask.

There were many pieces that came and went.  Most improved the team.  But, unfortunately as stated before, the team was no better for them.  The high expectations came by the wayside.  Injuries, while a big part of the very daily runnings within a league, hurt this team more than most.  They did not have the depth needed to be a long standing playoff fixture in this league.  There are no points for participation in this big league.  You either win or you don't.  And, if you don't, the expectations become that more important and harder to achieve.

The future looks dimly lit so to speak for the team.  With no investment in this coming year's draft or the next two to be exact, the team will have to rely on something that plays to one of L J Maverick's weaknesses historically --- free agency.  That coupled with second rounders and the propensity of the general manager to make trades is all this team has to look forward to build around a not-so solid nucleus to begin with.

In season news has word that rookie swingman Malachi Richardson has been shut down for the remainder of the season while talks that most of the starters will see limited minutes if any in the season's final week.
