League's MVP Won't Be Boogie-ing

Today we will be mainly focusing on one of the biggest acquisitions for the Orlando Magic and general manager, L J Maverick, in recent history.  One of the acquisitions that sent a stirring debate within the NLL community and it's other owners and general managers and made it's way for more fodder.

The acquisition in question was for DeMarcus Cousins.  "Boogie", as he is often referred to in the NLL and NBA, is a dominant forward by way of the University of Kentucky.  Cousins, in his short tenure in the NLL, is already on his third NLL team.  He was traded by the team that drafted him, Milwaukee, in a "draft day" deal that netted the Bucks Karl-Anthony Towns as a number one overall pick that season.  The Brooklyn Nets were ecstatic to have such a solidified presence manning their front court.  This season, and again back to the deadline deal with the Nets, Brooklyn decided to part ways with Cousins and other key pieces for Kevin Love, DeMar DeRozan and others.  The trade has turned out to be a good one immediately for the Nets but not so readily for the struggling Magic.

The issue within the trade for Cousins is that he was one of the top contenders if not THE top contender for this season's NLL MVP award.  His numbers with the playoff bound Brooklyn Nets were astronomical.  He was averaging 29 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 blocks per game while leading the Nets to the playoff push they had.  It was major signs that he was well on his way to becoming the league MVP.  The trade to the Magic, however, has changed the minds of the voters.  After all, he's now on a losing team.  But, one can argue that Cousins' numbers actually increased with the Magic.  And, of course, one can also claim that this would be due to that fact that he is on a lesser team.  Yes.  But numbers do not lie.  Cousins, with the Magic, is averaging 34.6 points, 16.5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.4 blocks per game all while shooting 52% from the field.  All these numbers surpass what he did in the past, but will haunt him if he isn't even considered for the trophy.  Mind you, these comparisons are internally with the two teams he has suited up for this year.  The competition's numbers pale in comparison to Cousin's overall numbers.  But, again, he will be haunted from going from a contender to a cellar dweller.
