So the NLL regular season has come to an end, and for only the 2nd time in GM smokey’s history (which dates back to the start of the NLL) the Mavericks will miss the playoff action. “We knew where we wanted to take this franchise from the start of the season, and although some didn’t agree it was a move that needed to be made for where I was at in my life personally and professionally.†Smokey said.
Dallas were labelled “tankers†very early on in the season and the whole franchise took it for what it was worth…not much. “I guess fact is the decision we made and with the direction we are taking, there was going to be a label associated with it, but that’s fine by us.†Smokey said. “We didn’t even own our own 1st round pick until week 14 of the season (laughing). But we love all the banter around the league, it’s what makes it what it is.â€
The attention of the staff now turns to the NLL draft. Going into the draft with four 1st round picks (3 of which are in the lottery) the Mavericks find themselves in a good position in which they can get some good young kids into the franchise to start the rebuild. “We have a lot of things to think about.†Smokey said. “We have some ideas that we would like to try and explore which will not only bring in some young prospects, but will also bring in some help on the floor right away for the beginning of next season.â€
The Mavericks are in a good position too when it comes to the roster. With a good amount of young talent who are signed and ready to get into the thick of the action come training camp. RFA Nerlens Noel will ask for a big pay packet, but The Mavericks will have enough faith in him to cough up the money.
