Roster - Detroit Pistons
New era begins in Detroit
Earlier this week it was announced that GM Laddas, who at the time was finalising a Kevin Love trade for the Orlando Magic, decided to move on. In a move that shocked most fellow GM's around the league, it wasn't something done off the cuff by Laddas.
"Well... It wasn't easy I can say that much. We had just finalised the agreement to bring Love in to the Magic setup and i was really excited about the big three and what they could accomplish out there.... but I was made aware the Pistons had recently removed their GM and they had an open off on the table for myself to take over. It took 49 hours and some deep thought but i decided i could not pass up this chance. Ben Simmons was a huge draw card but not just him. This city, these fans, they're some of the most passionate you will find in the NLL." Said a pretty happy GM Laddas.
It didn't take long for the new GM to make his mark. Jetting off veterans Tiago Splitter and Jose Calderon for future draft picks, buying out Josh McRoberts and trading out Timothy Hardaway and a future 2nd rounder to the Spurs in the agreement they wouldn't match the signing of Allen Crabbe. It's bee na positive start and most moves have been well received around the league. The new management is very happy at what lies ahead in the future for this team and it's not about the present, but its about 2-3 years down the line. The first step is getting Ben Simmons back healthy and incorporating him into becoming the leader of this franchise.
"I think you look at Ben Simmons and you go, wow... you know what he could be the next franchise player in this league. His athleticism, skillset, size and court vision are in an elite category. He ran a 3.1sec 3/4 court sprint for christ sakes and hes 6'10!. I am very excited at the chance to develop this young man." Said GM Laddas.
When Ben is healthy, the Pistons are happy with what is only the start of a great supporting cast to tailor to his strengths. We want guys who can shoot, defend and finish at the bucket. Simmons is a guy who will pass the ball to where you should be on the court so guys with great court awareness are a must. Avery Bradley is seen as perfect sidekick to Simmons to Batman show. Excellent defender, good spot up shooter and high basketball IQ. New addition Allen Crabbe, who will probably be the third option in this offense, is a great spot up shooter, an improving defender and has a knack for knowing where to be at the right time on offense, he is one who could benefit the most from playing with Simmons. New additions Jerryd Bayless and Solomon Hill, again Bayless is a great long range bomber and Hill is a guy who is moulded as a 3 and d player. Hollis Thompson is another wing who can nail the spot up three and Patrick Patterson and rookie Henry Ellenson are stretch fours who may be asked to play some 5 in a 1-4 set where the ball will be in Ben's hands and have him create opportunities.
Gm Laddas has gone on the record as to say his "heart was never really in Orlando" pointing to the time they traded away Anfernee Hardaway as a time he lost a lot of respect for the organisation, but hey a jobs a job right? This will be different, GM Laddas is so excited at this new challenge and feel's his passion and a hate for losing is exactly what this franchise needs to move forward. Let's see if it's to come true... in the meantime... DEEEE-TROIT BASKETBALLLLLLLLLLL!
