FA Day 1 and 2
Free Agency Day 1 Recap and Day 2 Prelude
Day 1 -
The Hornet's did have a chance of adding a nice piece on Day 1 of free agency as long as the order of events worked in their favour. Charlotte only had one player over the mid-level that needed to be addressed on this day, Kristaps Porzingis. As an RFA, he was always going to be brought back. The Porzingis contract was only a 15 million caphold while his actual contract was set to be around 27 million. With the team releasing the rights to Mario Hezonja on the day, they had around 14 million in available cap space as long as Kristaps was happy to hold off on signing. Unfortunately, KP had other ideas and opted to take his money quite early in the piece, and with it, eroding all of the Hornet's chances of adding anyone on Day 1.
Day 2
Charlotte enters Day 2 with 10 players under contract and a further two 2nd round picks who will likely be signed after Free Agency. This leaves us with 3 open spots to finalise the roster. Elfrid Payton is our only UFA who still needs to decide whether he's going to jetison himself away from the only team he's ever played for. All signs point to yes. Positions of need is wide open in Charlotte, with injury history galore in the likes of Embiid, Porzingis, Ingram, Holiday, Giles and Porter Jnr, it's easy to argue for need all over the floor. With Harry Giles looking out of favour in the NBA it may be tough to rely on him as a regular backup. Likewise, our guard depth doesn't exactly scream reliability either. For this reason, we'll be open minded and looking to add the best available talent on Day 2 before worrying about position fit afterwards. The team has the full mid-level exemption to work with but also had a below .500 record last season, so we're at long odds to add anyone significant without going all-in with our entire GM Point balance.
