PHILADELPHIA-
And like that, the Sixers roster looks totally different.
With
the season on the line and the playoffs getting further out of reach, the
Sixers more or less went on a trading spree, moving long established players for
some new blood in a desperate hope to re-energize the team.
After
the shocking trade that sent Kawhi Leonard to the Thunder for Paul George,
Denzel Valentine and picks, the Sixers made two other major moves that changed
the look of the team.
First,
the Sixers swapped forward Kelly Oubre with the Detroit Pistons for swingman
Rodney Hood. The Sixers have been after Hood for awhile and although they didn’t
want to move Oubre, Sixers GM decided to pull the trigger after the forward’s
spotty service filling in for the injured Leonard.
“We
were trying to develop Oubre but the club’s needs come first,†GM VT said. “With
the acquisition of George, and the hope of locking him up long term this summer,
a starting quality shooting guard was a more pressing concern.â€
Taking
on Hood is a gamble, especially with the way the injury bug has bitten the Sixers
this season. Hood appeared in only 34 games this season for the Clippers and the
Pistons after dealing with a leg injury. Like George, he is also an impending
free agent, however he is restricted.
However,
Hood is shooting nearly 50%, something the other Sixers guards have failed to
do.
Speaking
of failed guards, the Sixers again moved out shooting Eric Gordon, along with
Valentine and two picks, for forward Dario Saric. The Sixers almost got Saric earlier
this season, however Golden State GM Mailo pulled the plug on the deal.
GM
VT replied to comments that the Sixers gave up too much for Saric.
“Four
assets is a lot, but let’s break this down,†he said. “Gordon is expensive and
expendable with Hood and Louis Williams on the squad. We need that cap space to
retain PG-13. Valentine is a good prospect, but he would be buried. And picks?
I’d rather have a Saric on a cheap deal. We have been looking for a power
forward all season and with Dario we got the guy for the future. Paul George
and Dario Saric for Kawhi Leonard is a good for us.â€
It
has also been reported that Leonard, despite being medically cleared, has decided
to sit out for the rest of the season.
