Tyreke - Revived
Two years ago, the Celtics blew up the team that made the
NBA Finals to acquire Tyreke Evans. Boston had long coveted the explosiveness,
skills and versatility of Evans as he just screams 2k-ability. After acquiring
him, it was setback after setback. Expectations of what he can do and what he
can contribute were lowered and fans and the front office alike just wanted to
see him healthy.
Less than a year ago, Tyreke Evans was damaged goods. Coming
off multiple ruined seasons due to multiple knee and leg injuries followed by
surgery and time off, the Celtics were lucky if they could get more than a good
second rounder for him. His talent was still there, but it was buried under
piles of rust and self-doubt.
And here we are, in the present day… and multiple teams are
trying to pry Evans away from the Celtics. He signed a one-year deal to stay
with the team, with some health and performance based incentives, and he has
surpassed them with ease. He is also having more fun playing basketball than he
has had in a very long time – ‘I just love coming to work, to work, every
single day’, said Evans. And he, too, works hard, and has spent countless hours in the gym this past year, becoming leaner and working on his shot.
In a league where stats rule and talk (for better or worse) and team fit and
success isn’t as important, Evans statistics don’t jump off the page straight
away as ‘star-like – 17.6 points, 5.4 assists, 3.2 rebounds per game. However,
anyone who has watched him play this season, will tell you he plays like a
star, regardless of the volume of his statistics. It’s the efficiency and
timeliness of his efforts that make him a star – 52% FG, 35% from three (a huge
jump from his career averages) and 8
‘He makes really tough plays look easy, and he hits some
incredible, timely shots to close games’, said a rival GM
‘His size and speed at the point guard spot makes him elite;
we would love to have him on our team’, said an opposition coach
It’s no secret that Evans is loved by the Celtics, but the
team has certainly missed something with him missing the past few games.
Evans should return next week, which is just in time, with
Darren Collison getting minor knee surgery to clean up the joint.
