Celtics add Aminu, lose Iguodala
The Boston Celtics completed their first trade during the
2017-18 season during the week, agreeing to terms on a deal with the Golden
State Warriors. Boston agreed to send perennial winner and supreme wing
defender Andre Iguodala and tough big man Daniel Theis, as well as cash
considerations to the Warriors for Al Faroq-Aminu, Lucas Noguiera, Paul Zipser
and a 2019 first round pick.
Iguodala, 33, who was acquired last season as a critical piece for the team’s
championship tilt, was the best player in the deal and is an NLL champion.
However, with Tyreke Evans resurgence and Nick Young being added in free
agency, the wing spot was crowded – Andre deserved more minutes than what he
was playing, and the Celtics were paying him too much for what he was playing.
Daniel Theis, 25, was another sort after asset and the rugged, versatile big
man has already shown he can play, with terrific per minute statistics and
impactful block and dunk moments during games. The cash considerations were in
order to contribute to Iguodala’s 14+ million dollar contract.
In return, the Celtics acquired former Celtic Al Faroq-Aminu and prospects
Lucas Noguiera and Paul Zipser, as well as a 2019 first round pick. Before this
deal, Boston didn’t have a first round pick until 2020.
Al Faroq-Aminu, 27 is a versatile wing with the ability to play the 3 and 4. He
was on the team two seasons ago when the Celtics made the NLL Finals, before
being traded for Jarrett Jack. Al is an above average rebounder and defender
and can hit the open three – a crucial skill in today’s NLL. He will likely
walk into Andre Iguodala’s old minutes in the low 20s. Early indications are
that he is thrilled to be returning to Boston.
Lucas Noguiera, 23, is a four year player who was taken in
the first round in 2014. He has extreme length and is a terrific shot blocker.
He is still quite raw but has developed some level of outside shooting ability
and his awareness continues to improve. When healthy, he may have a role on
this team.
Paul Zipser, 23, was a second round pick from a few seasons ago. A 6’ 8’ wing
player, who is an above average defender and a pretty good shooter. He projects
to be wing depth for the Celtics and play only in the event of injury.
Al and Paul will be available for week five, however, Lucas
is suffering pain in his knee and has been shutdown indefinitely.
The week ahead…
A mostly healthy team will be on deck for a five game slate. Finney-Smith
remains on the sidelines and will be joined by Jeff Withey and Lucas Noguiera.
