To The Hospital or Arena?

The beginning of the season has been a bit brutal for the Nets. They came out winning only 2 of their first 8 games and featuring only half a roster worth of healthy players. In addition to the known absense of Jabari Parker and Cameron Payne - immediately prior to the season Eric Bledsoe, Larry Nance, and A.J. Hammons all went down with multi-week conditions, with Galinari joining them right after tipoff. Bledsoe is back now, Nance should be joining him shortly, Galinari, Hammons and Payne may be back soon as well. Assuming Rondae's sprained ankle isn't too bad - the team could be fully healthy minus Jabari in just another week or two - a huge bump from where they've been.

The new officiating standards have players across the league fouling out at a much higher rate - something that has exacerbated the injury woes. However, the team at least found a bit of success, albiet against a more forgiving schedule, in week 3. After limping through the first two weeks, they seemed to find a system and style that will work for them for now. They got into the middle of the pack in most statistical categories, which is far from where they were in the first two weeks and will need to be good enough for now.

The season hasn't begun the way any Nets fans would have liked - currently sitting in 10th in the East. But the team has done just well enough through 3 weeks that they're still within striking distance. Last season they started off very weak in the first couple of weeks before stabilizing a bit more as the season went on. Hopefully this year will follow a similar pattern.

On the positive side, Eric Bledsoe is currently leading the league in assists/game as the only player in the league in double digits. DeAndre Jordan is tied for the lead in rebounds/game. And DeMar DeRozan sits just outside the top 5 in scoring.

With the top guys all showing up on the leaderboards, where can the improvement come from? Well, obviously having four starting quality power forwards (Jabari, Nance, Rondae, and Galinari) will solve itself in time. Another player that really hasn't carried his weight - even as a 3rd or 4th option, is Khris Middleton (9 points/game on 40% shooting, 24% from 3). The team really needs Khris to be the floor spacer and has even sent him to the bench to see if that would help him break out of his scoring funk. They also need DeAndre on the floor - when he's been on the floor, they're great, when he's off of the floor (usually due to foul trouble), they've struggled.

It never takes the Nets too long to make the next move or try to find a different direction to take things - so don't be surprised to see that in the near future.
