Sixers Notes
11-19-2017
PHILADELPHIA- The
Sixers start slow each season, but this year has not boded well for Philly
fans. Even if a 3-4 start isn’t the end of the world, the Sixers are not only
beset by a multitude of injuries, but are playing uninspired basketball. They
are letting other teams score too much. They are turning over the ball. There
is no sense of unity.
Injuries
are the biggest and easiest thing to blame. Star Kawhi Leonard has yet to suit
up this season and his return date is still unknown. His right quad tendinopathy
is not responding well to treatment, according to team doctors, who refuse to
give a specific return date. All GM VT is willing to tell the press is “sooner
rather than later.”
Big
man Rudy Gobert, who is tearing it up with 17.4 points per game and 14.4
rebounds per game, will join Leonard on the shelf next week. He suffered a bone
bruise in his right knee this week, the same knee that kept him out part of
last season. He is expected to miss four to six weeks.
In
the meantime, Ed Davis and Richaun Holmes will both likely get their shot
starting at the five. Davis provides more defense, which the team needs, but
isn’t as explosively offensive as Holmes, who is coming back after fracturing
his wrist.
Help
is on the horizon, however. The Sixers completed a deal with the Sacramento
Kings that saw Darren Collison go to Sacto for power forward James Johnson. The
scrappy forward is what the Sixers have been lacking and could help push the
team back onto track while Gobert and Leonard convalesce.
“While
it’s sad to see Darren go (again), we needed a starting-quality power forward more
than a starting-quality point guard,” VT said. “Darren will get more minutes
and a better opportunity in Sacramento.”
The
deal also includes a swap of the recently signed Mike Muscala for Jose Barea,
but the team needs to wait for some paperwork to pass before the deal goes through.
