Bucks early report

As NLL seasons go, this is one of the weirder. Rules (khm...) changes favor going inside, scoring through bigs, getting to the free throw line. Bucks can do well that way. Rules might change though, to enable perimeter guys to shine more. But Bucks can play that way to. Either way, so far so good, Bucks started 5-1, some solid wins vs Cavs, Celtics and Bulls, the only loss coming against a surprise team of the year, Magic, where we lost the lead in last minute.

Recent ratings changes, based on trends in first two weeks, will influence the team for next few weeks. Both Kat and Westbrook started the NBA season slowly, one forgot how to shoot and can’t hit from charity stripe, the other is adjusting to a limited role and new teammates, so both received a small downgrade. Giannis is playing at MVP level and got another small upgrade. Most important is a substantial improvement for Donovan Mitchell, who’s developing into a starting SG for the Bucks. Mitchell won’t really score as in NBA, he’s distant fourth on the tendency scale, and that’s good with his inefficiency so far. His role is to defend and score opportunistically.

On the topic of shooting guard, Zach Lavine will begin full contact training. He is scheduled for a return at the end of the year. A nice new year’s present for Bucks. It’s not certain how Bucks plan to incorporate him. Starting wings get little chance with three ultra-high usage players next to them. Maybe playing big minutes from the bench might be a better solution, hoping to destroy the opposing backups?

CJ Miles started his first two games for Bucks. First game was a total disaster; he barely touched the ball and didn’t attempt any shots. He played better vs Bulls; maybe he didn’t like the media giving advantage in the matchup to Temple. He hit a three and played well on both ends of the floor. The future starter at SF is still somewhat in the air. Thad plays well off the bench, so it comes down to Prince and Miles. Prince might prevail in the end, just because Miles might get more chances off the bench.

Bucks signed a bunch of free agents to fill out the bench and make appearance in case of injuries. Old friend Jack played some minutes in week 1 with injuries in the backcourt, but took a backseat. Same with Patterson, whose minutes disappeared this week. There’s yet to be a Liggins sighting. PJ Dozier and Josh Maggette were signed to two year contracts. Only Patterson really has some role going forward.
