Then & Now - Kristaps Porzingis
Review and Projections
KRISTAPS PORZINGIS
Last Season
Kristaps emerged as the true star of this young Hornets team in the 2016/17 season. Despite his minutes dropping by 4.5mpg from his rookie campaign, he managed to increase his statistical output in every category except rebounds (down 0.6 and free throw percentage). It wasn't just among his teammates that he looked impressive, Porzingis lead the entire NLL in blocks per game for the 2nd straight season. In fact, looking at the averages over his 2-year career of 20 points, 10 boards and 2 blocks per game, it's hard to believe he is just 22 and years away from resembling any sort of peak. With the arrival of Thon Maker last season, another 7 footer who can stretch the floor and block shots, the coaching staff was able to spread the minutes a little better, getting Porzingis some much needed recovery time during games. It wasn't enough to get the Hornet's over the line and into the Playoffs though with reports the Latvian skipped his exit interview out of disgust. The Hornet's reacted quickly though by publicly declaring their intentions for the next decade.....they also went and drafted Porzingis's Latvian teammate and friend, Anzejs Pasecniks, as well as payed for the naming rights to a constellation for their prize player - "The Unicorn"
2016/17 Season - 32.7mpg - 22.5ppg - 10.3rpg - 1spg - 2.2bpg
This Season
We expect the coaching staff to heavily feature all three of their 7 footers when allocating the minutes distribution at PF/C again this season. It's a huge advantage to be able to run a similar set and playbook regardless of which of their bigs are in the game. Hopefully Kristaps can get that free throw percentage bumped back up towards the 80% range as he figures to spend a lot of time at the line this year and continues to blossom into the feature piece of this young Hornet's team. Expectations are high that Charlotte can ride the Zinger to just their 2nd Playoff appearance in league history, and with it, maybe Porzingis can finally start getting some respect league wide. For now, local fans know all to well what their Latvian Zinger Burger is made of (not chicken).
2017/18 Season Projections - 32mpg - 24.5ppg - 11.2rpg - 2bpg
