Draft Recap - Harry Giles

With the 13th Pick in the 2017 NLL Draft, the Charlotte Hornets select.....

HARRY GILES

How it came about

The Hornet's only lotto pick this year could have gone a number of ways. The team was enamored with multiple players and did attempt to trade back to pick up more than one of their targets. Just like previous years, the Hornet's scouting team didn't let precedence pressure them into taking mock draft favorites over a player they believe in. Already with a stack of good young talent on the team, front office decision makers decided to take a swing for the fences and select former number 1 High School recruit, Duke's Harry Giles. A player once thought to be a star in the making, Giles suffered multiple knee injuries which has completely hampered his development. Hornet's medical staff gave the final green light and the team was all aboard for the ride. All we can hope for at this stage is more thrills than spills.

How he fits into the rotation

Short term, there is no pressure on Giles to play for the Hornet's. The team fully expects to have Giles spend significant time down in the G-League for his rookie season. He lost so much critical development time over the past two years and really needs time for him to build up his confidence. His biggest hurdle will be overcoming the mental hurdles, trusting his knees and committing 100% in the staff that are working with him. With the likes of Kristaps Porzingis and Myles Turner locked into the starting spots, even when he does get a run with the Hornet's the best he can hope for is spot minutes in a backup role. Long term, the hope is that Giles can regain his confidence and display some of the ability that he showed glimpses off back in High School. If he can become a solid contributor for the Hornet's by next season and shore up their front court rotation in combination with Thon Maker off the bench, the Hornet's will consider it a successful draft selection.
