Clipper News

Press conference with GM Andrew

With the much anticipated NLL draft having come and gone once again and teams have seen their newly drafted GOATS play in summer league and subsequently begin to shuffle the decks in preparation for a just as important crack at the 2017/18 free agent class and a chance to add a player that can help push them towards a coveted playoffs appearance.

ESPN: The draft has obviously been and gone, summer league is over what did you make of your young guys that suited up for this year’s summer league?

GM Andrew: I thought the guys that played were exceptional and is shown by the fact the all NLL summer league 1st team featured three of the young Clipper prospects (Josh Jackson, Dennis Smith, John Collins).

All this should be taken with a few grains of salt though; it is just summer league play. All too often we see players dominate in this scenario and fail to translate to NBA league play.

ESPN: who surprised you the most?

GM Andrew: honestly no one really surprised the four main guys all showed something that we can be excited about. Josh, Dennis, John and Ante were all great.

ESPN: do you intend to play apart in free agency?

GM Andrew: possibly, Joel Bolomboy has been traded which will reduce the team’s roster to fourteen. So options to trade in a player are most definitely on the table. FA seems the most likely route now however as teams across the NLL have now began settling down with their core team

ESPN: Any idea of what the depth chart could look like heading into the season?

GM Andrew: It is becoming a little clearer yes, but training camp and free agency could change all that. So while we have a current idea right now who knows what the future may bring.

ESPN: still an extremely young team, what are your expectations for the coming season

GM Andrew: Improvement is all I can ask for, we finished dead last in season 16/17 being labelled as the NLL’s worst team isn’t fun; we expect a jump in a few guys that have been around for a while now D’Angelo, Devin, Rodney, Gilchrist and Capela. With the additions of the rookies we feel a little deeper as a team with a number of interchangeable pieces.
