Domantas Sabonis
The Minnesota
Timberwolves have acquired young Domantas Sabonis from the Philadelphia 76ers
for Cheick Diallo. Diallo has been
tearing it up in the summer league, and Sabonis was just recently traded to the
NBA Pacers. We are extremely excited to
have a young lottery pick from last year on the team. So, what do we know about Domantas?
He was born
in Portland, Oregon to famed Lithuanian Center Arvydas Sabonis. He stands 6’11†tall, and has some of skilled
moves for a 21-year-old. He already has
a good jump shot, and has a very high basketball IQ. Athletically, he doesn’t compare to Diallo,
however we feel he is in a good situation in Indiana to compete for the
starting job. Diallo isn’t going to
crack the starting lineup with Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins on the
team. Where does Sabonis fit in on an
NBA team now? He is the prototypical NBA
stretch 4 already. He can space the
floor, pass, and is quick enough to get by most bigs. He needs to work on his finishing in the
paint, but he has a bright future still
Where does
he fit in our lineup? He will be
competing with another stretch 4 in Nemanja Bjelica for the backup PF
spot. Expect him to see a lot of playing
time to develop his skills. This is yet
another move in the offseason of change for the Timberwolves. The roster looks to be completely different
at opening day next season than the game 7 loss to the Spurs. The goal has been to get younger, and get
more talent
As far as
salary, the Timberwolves had to cut backup point guard Deron Williams. He had a $13.5 Million cap hit, which wouldn’t
have gotten us the max MLE. After his
roster cut, it leaves the team in a spot at backup point guard, with Ron Baker
likely returning as the backup. The team
is going to be going after a backup in free agency to fill in.
Expect more
moves to follow as a Danilo Gallinari is imminent!
