Suns draft report 2017

The Phoenix Suns really had a disappointing draft in their eyes, when early on, all 5 of their top targets were selected before they were even on the clock.  Even all 3 of their backup choices were gone by #44.  Unfortunately for GM Pennywise, he was in the middle of a radio show, analyzing draft picks and teams, so he missed a few of the picks and really ended up miffed as he sent 3 different envelopes to the Commish’s podium, with the 1st 2 being players that were already selected earlier that round.

So the Suns went Best Available, taking Davon Reed, a 6’6” SG from University of Miami, known as a solid 3 point shooter (almost shot 40% from trey) and excellent defense.  Reed is very athletic and can play SG or SF.  Another underrated aspect of Reed’s game is his experience.  There was so much hype surrounding all these underclassmen this draft, that the Seniors tend to get overlooked.  Many are already targeting Reed as a potential “Brogden repeat” this year.  He is already NBA ready, so it will just be a matter of time to see if he will pan out.

Pick 55 saw the Suns go after the NBA version of Mr. Irrelevant, with Alpha Kaba.  Kaba is a very young prospect with a great wingspan and athleticism.  He’s likely a stash player that will hopefully come over in 2-3 years after improving the weaknesses in his game.  Kaba projects to be a small ball Center, or an athletic Power Forward.  He has already shown tremendous growth in his game from last year to now, so if he can continue that trend, hopefully he can make the Suns roster in the future.

The Suns did attempt to make some draft day trades, but with no luck.  Rumors were suggesting that the Suns were talking with the Orlando Magic and the Dallas Mavericks, both separate deals, that could see them fill some gaps in their depth.  One of these rumored trades could have seen them acquiring a potential starter for next year.
