Who Will Be There?

With the 4th worst record in the league this year, Toronto's GM was playing out all kinds of scenarios in his head, imagining what they might do with first, second, third or fourth pick. He eagerly anticipated this Saturday’s lottery to learn where the Raptors might land. Unfortunately, Toronto’s name was unveiled earlier than they’d hoped, landing the #6 spot in the 2017 draft.

This has changed the potential group of available prospects but, fortunately, the upcoming draft is purported to be the deepest in years. And if you tend to peruse all of the various mock draft sites, there is a general consensus of the players who will go in the top 10, but the order in which they will be picked varies quite a bit from site to site. And as we get closer to the draft, everything seems to be fairly fluid.

Another consideration is the swing that’s occurred in 2K. In the past several years, guards have dominated the game while Power Forwards and Centers weren’t half the players they were in the NBA. This year, the pendulum didn’t quite swing all the way in the other direction, but it has corrected and, some would say, over-corrected. If you look at the leading scorers in the NBA this season, 11 of the top 20 leading scorers were guards, including four of the top 5. In the NLL, just 6 of the top 20 leading scorers were guards, and none of the top 5.

Historically, the NLL draft tends to track pretty closely with the NBA draft. But it will be interesting to see if NLL GMs maintain that trend in what is a very guard-heavy draft (at least at the top), or if GMs might grab some of the forwards first.

For the Raptors, there’s no telling who might be available at the #6 slot. Fortunately for them, they need help in just about every position, so it doesn’t matter too much who’s there when their number comes up.
