We travel all the way back to 2003. This is the year that the Mavericks have only ever had their own pick in the top 10, and it was one to forget as they selected Reece Gaines. The only other year the Mavericks have picked inside the top 10 was with the Houston pick (via the Carmelo Anthony trade) and they selected Emmanuel Mudiay.

Mover forward to the 2016/2017 season and the upcoming 2017 NLL draft. The Mavericks took the bold move to move along their core group of player in favour of young assets and draft picks. Heading into the Lottery the Mavericks owned their own pick, Detroit’s, and New Orleans along with the Washington Wizards who snuck into the playoffs this season.

Lotto Night arrived, and the Mavericks were excited but being very realistic about their chances. “We had been scouting players around the 7-12 mark as that is where we figured our three lotto picks would land.” Smokey said. The 12th pick was won by Dallas (Via New Orleans) and things were going as planned. Still looking at the likely outcome of the 7th and the 9th overall pick, when Indiana was read out at 9th overall the Mavericks were a little baffled.

The picks kept rolling out to eventually be with two teams left, The Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks. The balls fell the way of the Atlanta Hawks on the night, but the sheer joy of the Mavericks camp was undeniable. “ we came into the night with no expectations, and we are extremely lucky to walk out of here with picks 2, 8, 12 and 16 in the upcoming draft.” Smokey said.

The Dallas Mavericks now have a lot of scouting to do, and are expected to work out up to 5 of the top prospects in the coming weeks. “We will get players in to work out with us, and sit down with each of them to figure out who fits best into our system.” Smokey said.
