Dwindling opportunity

The Suns just can’t keep any semblance of consistency this year.  They have been a roller coaster all year in terms of wins and losses.  Perhaps one needs not look any further than the fact the Suns will be using their 15th different starting lineup next week.  With no real consistency to the lineup, they have underachieved all year.  Preseason predictions expected the Suns to make the playoffs, but other Western teams have surged and the road to that elusive 8th seed seems even more unattainable now.

Phoenix had their chances to secure a playoff spot over the last few months, but they just could not put space between them and the 9th and 10th spots.  And recently, as the other teams made their push, the Suns decided to go 1-12 over the last few weeks.  Sure, they have won 2 of 3 this week, with a big game still looming today against the Jazz, but the hole that Phoenix has dug themselves into seems insurmountable this year and a playoff spot highly unlikely.

So, what is to be expected for the remainder of this season for the Suns?  Hopefully, they can find a way to sneak into that 8th playoff spot, though it seems any team that ends up there is only destined to be swept by the Spurs.  If nothing else, the Suns need to get to at least a .500 record, to help their chances next year in free agency.  The Suns definitely need help to become a more formidable opponent.  Perhaps having players that aren’t always hurt would help?

The Suns remaining schedule sees them playing playoff teams in all but 3 games, those being against the Mavericks, Pelicans and the Rockets (but the last 2 are potentially playoff teams, depending on how the season ends).  They did just beat the Lakers, but they were without star guard Dwyane Wade, so does that really count?  If the Suns want to make the playoffs, they would need to win at least 7 of their last 10 games and pray for help.  They do play games against New Orleans, Utah and Houston, so if they were to win all 3, that would give them a better chance for sure.  The margin for error is slim, so every game has become a do or die situation for Phoenix.  Can they rise to the challenge?
