Redick responds to move to bench

There are many words that can describe Jonathan Clay Redick, "Gunner", "Marksman", "Cultural Anthropologist". But none describe him better than "Teammate".

JJ was moved to the bench in week 11, with sophomore player Norman Powell given the starting role to split minutes with Redick to bring a stronger and faster defensive presence to the first 5. Many would have expected a drop in production with the move to the bench, as losing 10 minutes of court time per game throughout the week would limit the opportunities that Redick had to let the ball fly. Redick though saw it as an opportunity to lead the 2nd unit.

What GM Rootsey didn't expect was a significant increase in efficiency from one of the leagues true dead-eye shooters. For the season to date, Redick had been shooting 49% from the field and 45% from the deep line which ranked him 15th in the league in 3 point shooting percentages, while ranking 12th in attempts and 5th in makes. So clearly he was not only accurate, but was not shy about letting them go. With his move to the bench, in our small sample size, he shot 62% from the field and 70% from deep. This was on about half the number of attempts he had been taking in his starting role, but here's the kicker... while his attempts and minutes were down significantly, his scoring output only dropped 3 points per game. This lead his PER to jump 4 points from his bench play throughout the week.

The small sample size is hard to draw many conclusions from about whether the move is worthwhile to keep as permanent, but Redick has shown that he is a professional teammate, giving his best whenever he steps on the floor. The Nuggets are glad they hold his full Bird Rights for this offseason, as Redick could easily command a contract in the $15M pa price range based on the current market. The Nuggets expect to have tight cap constraints moving into the offseason, and intend to re-sign all their veterans and restricted free agents, but to do so could see them approaching or even blowing by the lux cap, depending on the demands of the RFA's.
